Said sunday thai he intended to remain Active in Community life in the nation s capital but he refused to Dis close whether he would run again for elective office. In the aftermath of the mayor s 10-week drug and perjury trial which ended Friday with his conviction on ust one of the 14 charges he faced there has been considerable speculation that he might seek a scat on the City Council in this fall s elections. During morning worship sunday at the tenth Street Baptist Church Barry fuelled that speculation a bit. I m going to continue to serve this Community continue to serve you he told the congregation. Barry said during the service that he had been bruised but not broken by his trial. The prosecution May have presented a lot of Evi Dence but god is a better lawyer he said. Although found guilty of one cocaine Possession charge in this Case a Misdemeanour the mayor was found not guilty of another Possession charge and the jury deadlocked on the remaining 12 charges three of them felonies. Barry has not said whether he will Appeal the single conviction. The prosecutor . Attorney Jay b. Stephens said he would announce on sept. 17 whether to seek a new trial on the 12 charges. Barry s friends say he has no plans to reverse an earlier decision not to seek re election to a fourth 4 year term As mayor. But they said he is giving serious consideration to running for one of two at Large scats on the 13-member City Council. They say that he feels a Council Job would enable him to remain a major political figure in the City and that he believes he has enough support to win especially since the Field is Likely to be crowded and Victory can be achieved with a plurality. The friends also noted that a 4-year term on the City Council would give Barry the 20 years of City service he needs to qualify for a full City pension. In addition to his 12 years As mayor Barry served for four years on the Council from 1974 to 1978. A poll published sunday by the Washington Post found that two thirds of All voters questioned Felt that Barry should not seek a scat on City Council and three fourths opposed him running again for mayor. About half of the poll respondents said he should resign. The poll also found that half of the respondents were satisfied with the outcome of the trial and about three fourths thought there should be no retrial. About two thirds said he should not serve prison time for the Possession conviction.
