Gene Hackman a unique Talent is in portraying Ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances with such flawless brilliance that he almost always raises the level of whatever movie he happens to be in even if its basically a dog. Happily his latest narrow margin is anything but a Bowser. And Hackman is in Peak form As Robert Caulfield a los Angeles Deputy District attorney who is thrust into the midst of a mob hit involving an underworld Boss he s been trying to put away for years. We Start off with Carol Hunnicut Anne Archer witnessing the murder of a lawyer by the mob after which she flees to a Remote Cabin in the Canadian wilderness. When Caulfield comes calling to try to convince her to testify in court he unwittingly leads some of the bad Guys to her. The duo ends up on a train for a 20-hour trip across Canada with at least two gunmen James b. Sikking and Nigel Bennett also aboard. Its up to Caulfield to find a Way to keep them from getting to Hunnicut. Writer director Peter Hyams has stripped the suspense thriller to its Bare essentials a refreshing change from the usual spate of convoluted efforts disgorged by Hollywood. There Are no pointless love interests tiresome flashbacks or witless digressions. Once the principals Are on the train its straightforward action All the Way. Hyams who also served As photography Honcho knows his angles. In one Early scene Caulfield and Hunnicut Careen Down a Bone jarring Mountain path in four wheel drive vehicle. The audience s Point of View is from a bumper mounted camera that May make people who Are prone to motion sickness feel like tossing their Popcorn. Later Hyams make great use of the closed in atmosphere of narrow compartment passageways and he also does some great work during the requisite fight scene on the roof of the moving train. Every movie featuring a train has to include a fight scene on the roof but this is one of the Best. Hackman is simply an underrated treasure. When one of the gunmen make him a Cash offer to turn Over Hunnicut Caulfield jauntily replies that he d rather not. Quot hike my Side of the courtroom Quot he says. Quot the pay s not so Good but the air is  Archer Isnit Given much to do except look terrified but Hackman covers for both of them. And while a few unanswered questions will Likely come to mind later the movie pounds along with enough red Herrings cat and mouse Maneu vers and sweaty Palms stunts that you won t even notice the holes in the script while the movie is whizzing by. To top it All off there s a nifty Surprise near the end involving a mystery blonde aboard the train and Aline from Hackman that goes Quot know what i like about you you re  ill say no More. Narrow margin rated r for violence is another Winner for Hackman to add to his lengthy and distinguished resume. It gets a solid three stars.
