European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 7, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Hiders pm dear Ann Landers recently you printed several letters on a subject that is of great interest to me a suicide. You be always urged your readers to take suicide threats seriously. But what about people who done to threaten suicide but then do it six months after my father died my Mother killed herself. As far As i know she never indicated to anyone that she was considering such a thing. She simply got out my fathers gun one night and shot herself in the head. Mama was a Nice quiet person who never got mad or yelled at anyone. She always seemed so a together a in Complete control a the last person in the world you a think would kill herself. I can to describe the hell she has put me through these past 14 years. There has not been a Day i Haven to thought that had i known i could have helped her. Everyone says How much i look and act like my Mother. Even our hands Are alike. I have bouts of being mad at her because she left me of her own free will. Its bad enough when a Parent gets sick and Dies but what she did to me was cruel. I worry that i will do the same thing when i get to be her age. My daughter looks and acts like me. Will she do it too does suicide run in families there must be others who wonder if they will follow in the footsteps of a Parent who took his or her life. Please respond. Louisiana dear Louisiana people who Are skillful at masking their feelings Are difficult to help. You Mother was certainly a master at it so there is no reason for you to feel guilty for not rescuing her. While some families tend to have More suicides than others there is no reason to believe that your destiny is preordained. I strongly recommend counselling however. If after 14 years you Are still agonizing and filled with rage you need professional help. Dear Ann Landers i Hope you will Settle an argument by commenting on my sense of decency a or Lack of it a in the following situation. My wife and i sometimes have a masseuse come to our Home to give us massages. Yesterday after a Massage i went into the living room wrapped at the Waist in a Large Bath Towel. My wife was visiting with a female Friend who had dropped in. I sat Down and joined them in conversation. After the Friend left my wife criticised me sharply for coming out in a Towel. She said that i should have at least put on a Robe. I was amazed at her Sharp criticism since there was absolutely nothing provocative about the Way i looked. In fact As i told her much More of me was covered than had i been wearing a bathing suit. My wife Sanger was particularly upsetting because i be always considered myself a Good judge of acceptable behaviour. Thanks for your thoughts. A . In . Dear if you came to me for approval bub pm sorry to disappoint you. I agree with your wife. A Bath Towel is not appropriate attire for visiting with a female guest. There Are other standards of propriety besides How much is showing. Would you approve of your wife joining you and a male Friend while wrapped in a Towel think about it for a moment and you la see what i mean. C creators Syndicate sunday october 7, 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11 a 2 sides of the 2 live Crew controversy Well Here we go again i Quot Las i he 2 Crew controversy was beginning to subside the Media has discovered another threat to the great american White Way. Use re p 8rup geto boys had an agreement with Geffen records to distribute their album. The record company backed out because they were a a frightened by the rappers a a violent lyrics. This is the same record company that handles the Rock group guns in roses whose lyrics i consider frightening and comedian Andrew Dice Clay whose material i consider disgusting. It seems the Only thing frightening about the geto boys is their blackness. Perhaps the geto boys own lyrics say it Best a this attack on the Black sound is just another plot to keep the brother Man music has been called the Universal language. Yet it seems the music Industry is not immune to the racism that plagues this world. A Dwayne l. Harris Heidelberg Germany there is a question id like to ask some of the people who have been expressing their feelings about the 2 live Crew controversy their feelings All boiling Down to a i like it. Anybody who does no to like it can turn it they say this with a great sense of righteous conviction. My question is since when did a i like it become the ultimate criterion of right and wrong a lot of people like All kinds of hard and soft drugs very much. A Bunch of Young Fellows in new York like to go a a Wilding in the Park and smash Peoples faces in with bricks and rape women. Charles Manson screw liked picking targets a harmless people and killing them. A i like it Isnit the last word. You 11 want to say a a that a ridiculous in a just saying if i like it and its Legal and it Isnit hurting anybody nobody a got a right to interfere with Well that a the whole Point. It is harming other people and probably harming you too. As for its being Legal or illegal Laws Are made by people just like you and me Only maybe a Little More thoughtful a people who have studied this matter and seen that it is harmful to those who Are too Young to judge but not too Young to be corrupted. They have concluded its harmful to society As a whole and that includes you much As you May think you like it. And Laws Are voted on and ratified by people just like you and me some of them Wiser but each with the same responsibility a to be As Wise As he or she can be and not As wilful As a naughty child. Although the Constitution and a Freedom of speech Are usually called upon and indeed stretched considerably by these free souls to support their position i think the document that really gives them their courage is the declaration of Independence a we hold these truths to be self evident that All men Are created equal that they Are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these Are life Liberty and the Pursuit of a the Pursuit of happiness that is their guide and their goal. But what did the founding fathers mean by the Pursuit of happiness i doubt they Ever meant those Beautiful words to cover such current maxims As a get yours a a having it ally or a any sex is Good in the first place As their words indicate they believed m god with All that implies in terms of taken for granted standards of right and wrong. That concept has kind of slipped away from Many of us without our Ever realizing How much of ourselves we throw away when we quit believing in god. And we get a lot of help from the formerly reputable american civil liberties Union which is now busily engaged a they inform us a in trying to wipe All references to religion out of american Public life. Just like Russia where do they get those ideas certainly not out of the Constitution or the declaration of Independence the founding fathers believed in god and they had Bone deep contents of duty responsibility and Honor the integrity of the craftsman the responsibility of the landowner to his name and his dependents the Pride of each individual in filling his place in society to the Best of his ability. They had no concept whatsoever of transient suit yourself happiness As a be All and end All As it is pursued relentlessly in our Days by a wide variety of slap Happy people who Are old enough to know better. To the Constitution makers and the signers of the declaration of Independence even the most privileged had their obligations and not to live up to them was to be a profligate and a Wastrel in the eyes of others not a portrait of happiness. They had no concept of happiness without self discipline. The Beacon they raised a the Light of Hope for millions was not for those who sought unlimited self indulgence it was for those who sought Freedom of conscience. You owe it to yourself to take a hard look at some of these things you like so Well and see what they really add up to for others for the future. And if you done to care a Whit about others then remember this you a better look out for yourself because the people who get out these pornographic records and the like Are not worrying about you. They just want to get there a fir test with the worst est a sell a million records and get Rich Over your dead body if necessary. You May need to make a few hard decisions about what you like and in the process find things you la like even More such As Confidence that you re Doimo the right thing and a new kind of self respect.
