European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 11, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday october 11, 1990 the stars and stripes a Page 11 letters office smoker compares performance Ann Landers a dear Ann Landers a letter i read in the la Crosse wis Tribune rang a Bell. I refer to the Man whose deceased father was lost by an airline. Our Mother was also lost this Way. Mom passed away while wintering in Florida. Momus Home was in Northern Michigan. She was to be shipped there to be buried. My sister who was with mom in Florida was to accompany the body. But when Sis arrived in Detroit she discovered that mom was not on the plane. The airline people were embarrassed and promised to do everything m their Power to find her. When they finally located Mother she had flown from Florida to Chicago and somehow got routed Back to Florida on to Tennessee up to Detroit Down to Texas and then to Washington . Finally three Days later she arrived Home. Mom bless her heart travelled More in those three Days than she had Ever travelled while she was alive. The dear woman experienced in death what she could never have afforded during her lifetime. The total journey Cost $69. No one loved a bargain More than mom. She would have been thrilled with this one. Sparta wis. Dear Sparta How wonderful that you could see the humor in such a grim situation. Its always better to laugh than to cry. Thanks for sharing. Dear Ann Landers in a another one of those a never thought id write types. But something is troubling me and writing to you seems like the Best Way to reach others and get some answers. I do Volunteer work in a Fine Hospital. It always upsets me to see patients being hustled around on gurneys As if they Are inanimate objects. In be seen Young people push these folks in and out of elevators along corridors and around Corners so recklessly that they often barely miss bumping into things by inches. Done to they realize that these folks Are frightened human beings trying desperately to cling to their last shred of dignity perhaps these Are underpaid employees who work awful hours in a Only guessing but still it seems to me that there is a sad Lack of empathy. I find this appalling. Do they perhaps need additional training a onetime workshop perhaps it also Breaks my heart to see people awaiting surgery lined up often for Long periods of time. The apprehension must be agony. they be permitted to wait in their own rooms with the Comfort of family members until it is their turn lord knows surgery is traumatic enough without being forced to wait for 30, 40 or 50 minutes in a corridor before going into the operating room. I am not criticizing the overworked nurses but it seems that some Small changes could make an incredible difference to the patients. Please comment Ann. Concerned in Cambridge dear Cambridge some hospitals have better trained personnel than others. And procedures vary. However i do Hope this letter gets the attention of Hospital employees. The Points you have raised Are valid and they deserve consideration. I also Hope that this column will appear on the bulletin boards of hospitals everywhere. People who work at every level with those who Are ill need to remember the importance of compassion kindness and consideration for human dignity. C creators Syndicate i smoke cigarettes. This is not some secret that i kept from my present employer supervisor when i applied for the position i now hold nor is it a habit i flaunt or seek to impose on those around me. When i do leave my desk and office every two to three hour sin a normally Back at work in about five minutes. I regularly arrive at the office on time and remain at the office until the close of business for the Day. In my up to Here with people complaining about those few times i do leave my work area to protect their lungs. The few minutes that i endure social exile each Day certainly cannot compare with the time my co workers spend 1. Gossiping about others. 2. Comparing notes on sources for buying clothing cars lipstick and guns. 3. Taking personal Calls from or making personal Calls to children parents and or spouses to discuss dinner menus vacation plans laundry schedules or House since when do we As americans not have the Freedom to voice our opinions and our objections without the fear of some Gung to people trying their hardest to cast a very dark Shadow on our lives if you Are trying to figure out what i am talking about let me fill you in i am talking about conscientious objectors in the military. As conscientious objectors we Are a Breed few and far apart. But we have one goal and common understanding Between us we will not take part in any War. You can think about us any Way that you want. That is your right. But in the same regard it is our right to believe what we believe in. If you were to try to ban co status you would have to in the same regard ban a few religious organizations along the Way. That would bring up article 1 of the Bill of rights which promises religious Freedom and also readers will be aware of the recent agreement Between the Federal Republic of Germany and the soviet Union with respect to the forthcoming repatriation of soviet forces to the . That agreement includes provisions for German payment for both the Cost of the troops removal from Germany As Well As for the Cost of their relocation in the soviet Union to include construction of housing and retraining of military personnel. This is the treatment the former adversary will receive its Reward for 45 years of oppression and confrontation. American forces will soon begin a withdrawal to the United states. These Are the forces maintained at great sacrifice and Cost who deterred the spread of communism and secured the Victory for democratic ideals. How will our forces be treated i believe that the Federal Republic of Germany should make a similar provision for . Forces. That is that All costs for their withdrawal from Germany and for their resettlement in America be borne by Germany. Meanwhile As with the arrangements made for soviet forces the Cost of maintaining our forces should be keeping duties. 4. Attending to the demands of extra committee duties that Are not work related. 5. Making ingesting and cleaning up after a a snacks consumed during regular work hours. 6. And any number of other activities that i could list and nausea. Moreover my Job is done during work hours. I willingly give time to help co workers with their jobs whenever allowed a in spite of the fact that some whining complaining non smokers claim that they Are so overloaded that they have to take work Home which incidentally earns them comp time i done to get. My Point is not taken to Stop the activities listed but in the nope that some of those a concerned supervisors will recognize that being at ones desk does not necessarily mean being at ones work and will find themselves better Able to be fair when it comes time to a give credit where credit is a name and location withheld the Freedom of expression. In response to one writer if you were to look into the history of the army you would find that during Wii there was a medic in the army who was a conscientious objector. Even though he was a co he still risked his life in the line of duty to save others. He earned the military a highest award the medal of Honor. Does this sound like a Coward or like a fundamentalist ideological idiot As you have put it we cos Are a peaceful people. We will not take part in War. But also we Are human beings and americans with the same rights As any other americans. Just because you do not believe what we do does not mean that we Are less human or less american. A airman Henry Spielberger Pitburg Germany borne by Germany. I further note that while the facilities soon to be vacated by the soviets Are known to be substandard and useless to the German state in their present condition those of the United states Are modern and Well maintained the greedy interest in these facilities by the various provincial and municipal governments is a testament to their state of repair and Utility.
