But there Are hazards some associated with cold weather others that Lurk in the Woods that can change your attitude and have you saying a this just Isnit fun minor mishaps or accidents can spoil everything and can happen regardless of whether you Are a Young or experienced Hunter. I recommend a few precautions and other things to think about. When you leave the House to go Hunting be sure someone knows where you Are headed especially if you re Hunting alone. This should be someone who will notice when you return or miss you if you done to. Check the weather and be sure you Are dressed for it. You might even take a thermos of hot Tea. But done to Wear All that extra Wool while you re driving. Leave some of the clothing in the Back scat or trunk. Then go easy on the car Heater to avoid getting too warm. A. A a a. A a. A. Be sure you take a hat. Its a German custom to Wear one when Hunting and in the Winter it serves a special purpose. The hat helps your body retain heat. Without the hat in cold weather your body can rapidly lose heat leading to hypothermia a a Cooling of the body Core temperature. As you drive to the Hunting area stay aware of the dangers associated with Winter driving. Black ice is common on roads in Germany in the Early morning hours in be had some close Calls on Hills near my favorite Hunting area in Bavaria. You should use Snow tires. When you get on those Forest trails you la be glad you have them. Loading the Rifle is something we do so routinely its easy to be careless after you be parked the car gotten out and Are ready with All your gear take special care when you chamber a Cartridge. Its a Good practice to remove the Bolt and look through the bore to see that its Clear. Be sure your Finger is not on the trigger and the muzzle of the Rifle is pointed in a Safe direction. Pay attention when closing the Bolt to be sure the action feels smooth and Complete. Then remember to put the safety on. Unload the Rifle before climbing the ladder to the Hochwitz. Check the condition of the ladder. The rungs can be Slippery and weak if waterlogged. If one Breaks you could be seriously Hurt. I knew of a Hunter who got caught on a ladder when a rung broke. He Hung upside Down until his Hunting companion a few Hundred meters away heard his Calls for help and came to the Rescue. Carefully reload once you re settled in the Hochwitz. This next bit May seem crazy but it just might prevent an Accident imagine where your body will shift should you accidentally go to sleep. Be sure there is something to prevent you from falling to the ground. This May seem like a Remote possibility but it can happen. Watch the weather. If a Strong wind comes up leave the Forest. Trees falling from heavy wind done to give much warning a and this happens a lot in Germany. A a Quot a v if you develop a chill drink some of the hot Tea or consider calling it quits for the Day or at least until you can go some place and warm. Up. Done to drink alcohol when out in the cold. It can cause your body to lose heat faster. If you want a shot of Cognac or other alcohol its Best to wait until the Hunting and driving Are Over. A remember to remove the muzzle cover before shooting. Quickly Check the area in front of the muzzle of your Rifle to be sure there Are no obstructions. It is possible to look through the scope and see a Clear picture of your target. Yet the muzzle could be pointed directly at a tree limb or other construction you Don t see through the scope. After the shot remain Calm and Don t get in a hurry. When you re ready to leave the Hochwitz unload the Rifle then climb Down carefully. Once Back in the car and headed Home stay Alert. It s easy to get sleepy after hours in the cold weather and you re feeling the Comfort of a warm car. If you notice drowsiness pull Over and take a Short Nap or get out and stretch. Do what is Best for you to stay awake at the wheel. So now i remind myself and i Hope others that Many accidents Are caused by doing carelessly those things we usually do As a matter of routine. Lets try to remember All those routine things and do them right. Enjoy your Hunting.
