European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 16, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 24 b the stars and stripes saturday March 16, 1991outdoor adventures s Ripe a during every Hunting year its a Good idea to work on some of those Little tasks necessary to keep All your gear in Good condition. March being the closed season for most wild game provides a Good time to do some of the cafe and cleaning. A Little repair and preservation Effort for your fax verite Hunting guns can be Good therapy for those end of season blues and helpful for passing the time until the new season comes around in a few weeks. And Over the years you la take Pride in How your equipment still has that Good care look to it. For guns the Basic requirement is to clean them thoroughly then apply Oil. When doing your heavy duty cleaning Job at the end of the season its a Good idea to remove the Stock completely. Then you can concentrate on All of the Metal and not worry about get Ting Oil a and solvent on the Wood v the bore often needs the most attention. I recon. Mend a Good swabbing with Patch and solvent. Then Clear with a dry Patch. Follow this with about 10 passes of the wire Brush. Put some solvent on the Brush after about the second pass. Then swab with More patches and solvent when a dry Patch comes out clean go through with an Oil Patch to leave a Light coat on the bore. For some of those hard do get at places in the action you May want to try an old tooth Brush Small paint Brush toothpick a tip or Duck Wing Feather. These a a tools can be helpful depending on what you re trying to clean or Oil. There Are a number of Good preservatives available in Rod and gun clubs and european Hunting stores. Many Hunters use hoppers gun Oil Cito Waffen oel and Bali Stol Klever. They re All Good. For the bore i often use one of the oils both of which have an Ideal consistency and provide Good Protection. Then a Good coat of bal Stoi Klever on the outside Metal parts a mainly because the Balis Mark Swearengen a Tol does no to run As much As Oil and is a Little friendlier to wooden stocks. / although in be had excellent results with wd-40 when cleaning and preserving various tools and equipment i find it less desirable for firearms because with time it seems to leave a residue that tends to hamper moving parts. A a a a a a firearms should be stored in a dry place and protected from dust. They should also be locked in the gun rack or Cabinet. I use camera Lens paper and Lens cleaning fluid on. The Glass of Scopes and binoculars. This seems to work just Fine. Using a Lens Brush first to remove dust and other abrasive debris is a. Good idea. Rub lightly with wet paper then wipe w the dry paper. Be sure the Glass is dry then cover with the Lens Caps. Stocks should be cleaned with a Damp rag then wiped dry i recommend a Light application of Schaf Toel Stock Oil applied to the Wood once a year. This is available in German Hunting stores. Just rub a thin coat of the Oil with your hand or cloth Over the entire surface of the Stock. Boots and other leather items should be cleaned then treated with a Good leather preservative. Some boots require specific treatment with Oil or Wax base preservatives depending on the tanning process used on the leather. Check either the instructions that came with the boots or the manufacturer. In be used a couple of preservatives for several years that seem to work Well. One is Huberd s shoe grease. Its a preservative and waterproofing that has about the same consistency As Axle grease. It s Good on Oil tanned leather. For Chrome tanned leather i use some stuff called Bee Seal plus it waterproofs and can be applied to boots even when wet after a Day in the Snow. The important matter during these slow weeks of the Hunting year is to take the time to be sure your equipment is properly preserved. Then go out. And get reacquainted with some other great outdoor pastimes like hiking and skiing. Before you know it the Hunting season will be Here again. The Heidelberg Rod and gun.
