The history books make it Clear that losers Seldom hold parades. Done to get me wrong the military did no to lose in Vietnam the vietnamese people lost. His Homecoming resulted from americans who Felt guilty about letting Down their military and the vietnamese. As military professionals we do what we do because it is our Job. We done to do it for Reward or glory. We Are Well aware that we serve at the will of political masters. A a \ / _ in Vietnam our political masters failed to clearly identify political goals. The senior military leadership failed to insist on attainable military objectives with a clearly defined end. Yes the 58,000 dead and the rest who served faithfully in Vietnam deserved better. However All was not lost from the Vietnam tragedy. Vietnam veterans now Lead our military. They Learned two great lessons which became evident in the Gulf. First no War can be fought without Clear political goals and attainable military objectives. The senior military leadership must demand that politicians articulate the desired goals to be achieved. Second to achieve those military objectives requires a Well trained dedicated professional military Force. We Vietnam vets who stuck it out can also be proud of the professional Force we helped to create that was so successful in the Gulf. That Force executed with skill and they deserve All the Honor and thanks a grateful nation can give them. So done to feet cheated feel proud of what you helped Mold. Finally i would argue that the Vietnam memorial is More than a giant wound in the Side of America. Its a fitting memorial to those who served. A it. Col. David g. Of Connor shape Belgium. A a Quot time to alter system this letter is in reference to the letter titled a officers also fight the writer made an interesting observation about members of Congress and further exemptions on tax Relief for officers May also be a valid Issue. However the writer overlooked the fact that officers have been receiving a separation pay from the military for years. Non commissioned officers and enlisted soldiers Are Only eligible for the leave they be managed to accrue not to exceed 60 Days. An 0-1 with six months in the service can be placed in the position of rating a senior non commissioned officer who a training him or her. The no quite probably has 12 to 15 times the officer s military experience and the officer is probably earning less Money than the no. There is no other educational system where the student grades the teacher. If there is any truth to that hollow adage that a a cos Are the Backbone of the army a then certainly enlisted soldiers Are the Backbone of the no corps and the military itself. It is time to give tangible recognition to All enlisted soldiers. A staff sgt. Reginold a. Johnson Neu Ulm Germany. A a. Enlist cd need a break this letter is in response to the writer who believes that he should get a $2,000 tax break instead of a $500 tax break because he is a professional military officer. I believe that we in the military should All be Cut some Slack by con Gress. But lets be realistic Here. An officer with a wife and two kids makes a lot More Money in entitlements than an enlisted Soldier with a wife and two . The officer is getting by just Fine with his or her base pay and Large entitlements while the enlisted Soldier is just trying to make ends meet until they earn the rank of staff sergeant or higher. A. So who needs the tax break More the officer or the enlisted i say the enlisted Soldier. As a professional non commissioned officer i believe that officers should be More concerned about the welfare of the enlisted soldiers instead of worrying about themselves. Without the enlisted soldiers the army of today would come to a standstill \ a sgt. Robert c. Dillow Heidelberg Germany satisfied Reader i am a specialist in the 162nd my co. We Are a National guard unit from i Crystal Springs miss deployed to saudi Arabia. V since our arrival in Early september i have been Reading your paper As often As possible and have been very pleased with your coverage of the War a not just your stories and pictures but your interviews with the brass and enlisted soldiers involved in Battles. I have kept each copy of the stars and stripes and i intend to carry them Back to the states and donate them to the Library for the students to use for be ports and term papers. So As you see your paper not Only informs and entertains the troops stateside and abroad but will also help students Back in Mississippi. I want to take this time to say thank you for a Job incredibly done. A spec. Paul Rhodes Crystal Springs miss. A. A a a a a a. A a. All were once minorities the author of a understanding history obviously does no to realize that the majority of White americans Are descended from ethnic groups that were at one time a minority in the new world. These minorities in their struggle for Freedom and democracy sacrificed plenty including their dignity at a times. / /.. I Don t believe history should Ever be forgotten especially the unpleasant moments. For if we forget the wrongs that were done in the past we Are destined to repeat them. I just feel it should be left As history and not be allowed to materialize in the present. I would also like to address the Issue of affirmative action As a social action. Well its not it is a Legal Issue and for a More educated understanding of it please read. A civil rights act of 1964, title Vii As executive order 11246, As amended. A Lawrence d. I believe the writer hit the Nail on the head. These so called experts should Stop confusing Patton with actor George c. Scott. I suggest they read Patton a diary. Patton a main concern was How he was going to go Down in history. He was egotistic band a megalomaniac. Schwarzkopf interviews that we heard on the radio during the War stated he was concerned about our to the editor Schwarzkopf a is a general but he a also a humanitarian. William j. Cress operation desert Storma badge for All we deployed to the Middle East As a multinational Force. Our goal was to push the invading army of Iraq Back across the kuwaiti Border. The Long and grueling three Day March took us through saudi Arabia Iraq and finally Kuwait. Service Mem ers from All walks of life fought Side by Side in the trenches and bunkers. And at the end of it All the Mission was accomplished. Then came time for the rewards and Only a select few received the combat infantryman badge. We All risked Wiir lives for the cause of Freedom. A number of service members served in an infantry position. Why did no to they also receive the badge because they did not have an 11-series skill identifier combat arms specialities ? these soldiers fought because lives were depending on their Success. But when the final count is done these troops will be the forgotten ones. Lets not forget any Soldier. There should be some Type of badge for each Job that can be earned by the men and women that guard our Way of life.
