I am not writing about All the turmoil about racial discrimination or the injustices so Many seem to feel exist in the military. I am writing so that i can thank a vast group of people in the Only Way that i can at this time. I am with the 56th aviation co. On oct. 7, i was told that my wife was terminally ill with a brain tumor. I have never Felt so alone in my life. Within hours though i was not alone anymore. My commander maj. Vins picked up my children and brought them to the Hospital and then stayed until my wife was out of surgery. This was just the beginning of what was to become a major undertaking by the entire military Community to ensure that i was Given All the assistance i needed. 1 would like to thank the staff of the Lan Stuhl 2nd general Hospital for All that it did for my wife and me. I would like to say thanks to the administration clerks at 21st theater army area come for doing the paperwork i needed while i waited. I want to thank those at 1st personnel come for All their help in getting my paperwork to department of the army. A very big thanks to the Mannheim military Community especially Tina at transportation for letting me have head of the line privileges so that i could Complete my out processing. Most of All i want to thank my unit the 56th aviation co. You All including the wives Are what True military professionals Are about. Thank you for taking care of my children and personal matters so that i could be with my wife while she was in the Hospital and awaiting Transfer to Walter Reed army medical Center. Thanks to the wives for All the meals you brought to my Home. I wish i could express myself better because a thank you does not really say that i will never forget what was done for me by so Many wonderful Loving and caring people. My wife and 1 do not have much time left together but at least what time we do have will be a time of Joy thanks to your efforts. Again thank you All from the Bottom of my heart and May god bless you All. A chief warrant officer 2 Larry a. Howard Mannheim Germany Hunters at fault in reference to the a True Hunter a it is interesting to note that this Hunter was concerned that a anti Hunting Nincompoop a would give the Young and the uninitiated a bad image about the Joys of Hunting. In the same Issue there was an article relating an incident in Riverside Wash. Up to a dozen Hunters were found to have trapped a Large number of Deer in an enclosure in a Field and then got Down to the business of a a Hunting them. They killed at least 20 Ducr in this sporting process. The writer need not worry that Peta or even comic strips will give people a bad impression of Hunters. It appears Hunters Are doing an admirable Job of demonstrating the atrocities that can be committed by Man against animals in the name of As for the belief that Hunters License Lees go toward the preservation of the game animals that Are hunted Well what an absurd idea. Wildlife managers Are paid to artificially manipulate the environment they oversee and this is not always done in the Best interest of the animals involved. Natural predators prey on the old the sick and the weak culling the herds of inferior Stock thus ensuring the very highest Quality of the surviving animals. Hunters on the other hand Hunt and kill the strongest and Healthiest animals thereby contributing to the degradation of the Gene pools of the animals that they Are convinced that they Are trying to the statement made by the writer that Hunters a a Hunt in order to get a the pure enjoyment of being in nature strikes one As a contradiction. Most people derive pleasure from a walk in the Woods observing nature and getting away from the rat race. Not All of us however need a Shotgun Rifle or Bow and Arrow at our sides in order to feel in tune with nature. Fowler commander an Europe slavery excuse a Hogwash the letter a real Black leadership was nothing More than racist Hogwash. The writer Speaks of the state of mind produced by slavery yet refuses to see that his own state of mind is produced by an inability to take responsibility for his own actions. There is no african american alive today who could be called a a one time slavery an abominable practice was abolished once and for All More than 120 years ago. Five generations have passed since then. My grandparents came to America Only 60 years ago. As italians they were called names yet persevered through the discrimination they encountered to make something of themselves. My father had to quit High school so he could work to help support his family yet today he is a successful businessman. They did no to worry about what anyone else said. They were victims but refused to see themselves that Way. Pride pushed them above the Disimi nation levelled against them a Pride and a desire to take responsibility for themselves. The same can be said of the asians arabs indians hispanics and a dozen other minority groups that have prospered in the face of discrimination and of course the Large number of successful to the editor. As a matter of record i am firmly against racial prejudice in any form and believe that each individual should be judged purely on his or her own merits a and should take responsibility for his or her own actions instead of blaming shortfalls on some imagined a a training the person has received at the hands of some fictional conspiracy. A sgt. Michael a. Fundaro Erlanger Germany a aids and attitudes this letter is in response to a flip Side of the writer states a it is hard for the american people to forget who were the initial causes of the nationwide spread of this statement struck me As being a typical response from society in regard to diseases. Since the creation of Humankind diseases and plagues have been a part of our existence. Society has always tried to fix blame for a disease or plague on the individuals it affects. Tuberculosis was often imagined to be a disease of poverty and deprivation. In contrast cancer is often associated with an affluent society. The highest incidence of cancer occurs in wealthy countries where excess is abundant. Eventually plague will become the principal metaphor by which aids will be understood. The word plague can strike fear especially fear of the unknown into the hearts of people. Plague is the highest Standard of collective calamity and evil. Diseases of the past have been characterized As repulsive avenging and invasive. Aids is regarded As retribution toward a libertine Community. To quote from Susan Sontag a illness its metaphor. A the people who have the real disease Are also hardly helped by hearing their diseases name constantly being dropped As the epitome of evil. It is invariably an encouragement to simplify what is Cost ilex and an invitation to self righteousness if not we will Progress As a society Only when we become As obsessed with finding a cure for diseases As we Are with fixing blame.
