The thirty years War brought robbery plunder and pestilence. It suffered still More during the seven years War and Napoleonic War. Steinau has had its ups and Downs but it was t until after world War ii that it began to take on a new life. Streets were repaired half timbered houses were restored and a new found interest in its history started to emerge. Tours of Steinau begin around the former residence Castle of the princes of Hanau. The imposing layout was built in the Early Middle Ages. Today it contains a museum honouring the Grimm Brothers. Memorabilia includes a Small collection of books paintings drawings and furniture. The total Structure is protected by a dry Moat and connected to a Park. Nearby is the marketplace a fairytale wishing Well and the late gothic Katharine Kirche or St. Katherine s Church. Friedrich Grimm Grandfather of the Grimm Brothers was minister of the Church from 1730 to 1777. Worship services Are no longer held there but the building is open for cultural events. On saturdays sundays and holidays during the Spring and summer fairy tales Are brought to life in a former stable which is now the setting for the Marionette theater.
