That Sall Fine if that a what you want but Many soldiers will choose to separate on one or another Early out programs. So what a the problem the Lack of support Given to these soldiers and the incompetent ways information on these new policies is handled. The army times and radio Are great sources on what a happening now and what a going to happen in the future. But when these things become policy its Only fair that the Chain and support Chain of command get the information out. Its not doing the service member any Good if its sitting at the battalion Pac personnel and administration Center or the unit training office. this help out on the troop reduction if Only minutely maybe they Are just too Busy telling us All the a a bad ways a Soldier can get out instead of devoting equal time to the a a Good ways a Soldier May separate from the armed forces. A Victor l. Vaughn Giessen Germany tumbleweeds did ?~win9 the response a writer gave to the stars and stripes headline ?o2,657 soldiers to win stripes for master sergeant next year was in part Correct and incorrect. She stated soldiers do not a a win stripes they earn them through hard work and perseverance. No doubt the vast majority did earn their stripes. But there were some who actually did a a win their stripes. Some cos staff sergeant sergeant major have had a continuous or an on and off drinking problem financial problem weight problem family problem. They barely pass their aft mos set test and College courses not to mention having a a hidden Ucma uniform code of military Justice actions in their restricted file. If they still get selected to the top three senior no ranks they Are winners a Tumbleweed no winners. A Tumbleweed no is a sergeant who has not performed 100 percent to army and promotion Board standards but was Able to Tumble in instead of being weeded out for promotion. Who sat fault unit commanders and senior cos who overrate and inflate no ers evaluation reports for one. The other ones Are those unit command sergeants major and colonels and above who have sat on previous promotion boards and have seen the problems that plague the selection process but prefer to sit Back and do nothing so it seems. Instead they should be trying to improve future selection Board procedures. This explains Why we will always have a Tumbleweed no a sgt. 1st class Richard f. Tscherne Vicenza Italy not like the movies i just can to believe that some gun nut actually tried to use the Killeen Texas massacre to promote the proliferation of guns. According to this Guy if the patrons of the restaurant had been armed someone could have killed the murderer before he killed so Many people. This Guy has been watching too Many old matinee westerns. In the movies the Good Guy always gets the bad Guy with one shot and innocent bystanders Are never hit. In real life it just does no to happen that Way. Can you imagine what might have happened with two dozen armed untrained people in a panic situation shooting at anything that moved they More Likely would have shot each other than the nut with the gun. For hundreds of years we have been striving to build a society where people can walk Down the streets of their towns without fear. How Many people would like to live in a society where you have to go around armed and be prepared to shoot it out to stay alive i suggest those people try Lebanon or Yugoslavia. Ironically two Days after the letter calling for More guns in Texas was published an article appeared citing a study that showed guns Are responsible for More deaths in Texas than any other cause. Texans done to need More guns they need fewer. A master sgt. Floyd a. Your soldiers Are Lucky to have a caring senior no who is willing to fight for what they deserve but All soldiers Are not so Lucky. My husband a staff sergeant was assigned to the 82nd airborne div for Ivi years before moving to Germany. During his tour he spent three years in the infantry As a platoon sergeant while he was an e-5. As an e-3 assigned to a mortar platoon he jumped into Grenada for operation urgent fury. Because of the Lack of Good intelligence and terrain products he became a terrain analyst so that other infantry units would not experience the same problems As his. Because of my husbands knowledge Diligence and hard work the 82nd airborne div did not have problems during operation just cause in Panama and operations desert shield storm. He was acting division sergeant major during deployment to operation desert shield and was solely responsible for the movement of troops and equipment out of fort Bragg n.c., to saudi Arabia. Ror this he was put in for a meritorious service medal me which he greatly deserved but in the 82nd airborne dives eyes that award is for e-7s and above. He received an a com army commendation medal and Felt cheated. He will be an e-7 soon so next time hell get his Mem even if he does no to work nearly As hard As he did on the first. He ii get it because of his rank letters to the editor he is a Good no and really cares for his soldiers. In a glad to see there Are at least two of you still in the army. A Eleanor Miller Frankfurt Germany it can happen to you9 the recent seemingly endless letters about both racial prejudice and sexual harassment reveal that most of the writers Are anything but objective on the subjects. A classic Case in Point is the letter that strives to make the Point that the recent confrontation Between Justice Clarence Thomas and professor Anita Hill was a a big throughout her letter the writer lets us know that she really thinks Thomas is guilty even though she concedes that a we will never mention is made of the fact that questions were left unanswered by Hill. Why did she not report this Long ago most important Why did she maintain a cordial relationship with Thomas i agree that obviously someone had to be lying and probably we will never know the real truth. But Given the testimony presented and the total Lack of Concrete evidence supporting the charges i believe that it would have been a terrible injustice to have arrived at any decision against Thomas. Everyone apparently agrees that the conduct of some of our highest elected representatives and the entire a a circus atmosphere surrounding this matter were a National disgrace. I am afraid however that we have ignored the most important lesson in this unfortunate mess. If anyone can accuse another of sexual harassment abuse without any proof i.e., just their word against the word of the accused then we Are in deep trouble. Careers can be ruined families and lives torn apart by unscrupulous people of either sex abusing the system for whatever gain or personal reason. It does not matter whether you Are male or female it can happen to you. A Gary Altpeter Rodenbach Germany remark misunderstood this is in response to a the stigma i have not seen the particular an broadcast the writer refers to but it is unfortunate that a remark made in seemingly Good Faith was misinterpreted. It also seems a sign of the times that if something can be interpreted different ways the negative rather than the positive is highlighted. I choose to believe that the remark in question merely pointed out the positive role Model aspect of Well spoken afro americans As indeed is the Case with any Well spoken individual regardless of skin color. However whatever the causes african americans seem to have greater difficulty than other ethnic groups in defining proper role models other than a handful of truly great men such As Martin Luther King or. Demagogues abound but Root causes for the Lack of role models Are much More Complex than they would have us believe. To turn around the seeming headlong Rush into oblivion of the great mass of afro americans is a Challenge that must be taken up by All americans if we Are to survive As a viable nation. This True state of Equality demands great sacrifice Energy and willingness of All the nation especially afro americans. . Koegl Wei Brincken Germany
