Duke needed the certified signatures of 2,500 registered republicans and independents to Garner a spot on the ballot. Friday was the certification deadline and Duke Bay state coordinator Alan Balboni conceded the Campaign was far Short of the target. A the Way the certifications of the signatures Are coming Back its obvious we re not going to have enough to get on the ballot a Balboni told the Boston Herald. The Herald found Only 321 signatures certified in 19 communities surveyed including the four most populous in the state. On dec. 13, Massachusetts Secretary of state Michael Connolly and state gop chairman Leon Lombardi refused to list Duke on the primary ballot rejecting the argument that they should because Duke is a a nationally recognized the decision forced Duke supporters to launch their signature Campaign. A week ago the Duke Campaign said 3,500 signatures had been collected but either the figure was exaggerated or most of the signatures belonged to people who were not registered to vote. In the Boston suburb of Needham town clerk Theodora Eaton said Only two signatures were submitted and Only one certified. By contrast Balboni said a Campaign Volunteer had led him to believe 400 signatures had been collected in the town. The Only Community where the number of signatures certified came close to the number collected was Plymouth. Duke supporters collected 64 signatures from the Shore Community and 46 were certified. A emr. Connolly won and that a the last time ill stand up for what i think is right a Balboni said. A a in a out of Lombardi the gop chairman said the failure of the Duke signature drive was indicative of the Duke Campaign As a whole. A if Duke can to Cam his Way on he should t expect anyone to hand a place to him a he said. Duke told the Herald last week that he might sue for a place on the ballot if the petition drive failed but Lombardi predicted such an action would get nowhere. A the Law is quite Clear that the party chairman has the discretion to put on whomever he or she chooses. And the language under which the Secretary operates is sufficiently vague that Connolly has discretion to decide who is a a nationally recognized meanwhile the Duke Campaign in Texas said Friday it had sent a $5,000 Check for the filing fee and the necessary paperwork to enter the March 10 primary.
