Still the superpower of dance by Regina Kirkendall staff writer Quot dancing is ingrained in the russian soul Quot this hold statement by Ballerina Anna Pavlova the Grande Dame of russian Ballet certainly holds True for the dancers on the current tour of the russian state Ballet. Late last month the company headed by dancer and choreographer vat Cheslav Gordeyev enchanted an audience at the Congress centrum in Wurzburg Germany. If that performance is any indication Russia does t need an army to conquer the world a it should just Send its dancers. The company is about Halfway through a 50-performance tour of Germany Belgium Luxembourg and Austria that began in Early december and ends next month. Infinitely Graceful movements interwoven with powerful leaps Are the trademark of the russian state Ballet and All of it is brought to life by Gordeyev s masterful choreography. Thirty five dancers took the Wurzburg audience on a journey through Ballet history. Included in the Potpourri of numbers were Chopin s Waltz no. 7, beautifully executed by Natalia Tschechow Skaya and Vassili Poluschik the grand Pas from Don Quixote and Gordeyev s wild and intriguing new version of walpurgis nacht from the opera Faust. But the russian dancers did t concentrate solely on the classical style of Ballet. They mixed in enough modern material to create a captivating blend of old and new. Especially noteworthy among the modern Ballet numbers was a dance to Lionel Richie s the Blind girl performed by Masami Chino and Oleg Kozlov and daringly different approach to George Frideric Handel s Paganini. Both pieces were choreographed by Gordeyev and both were breathtakingly expressive. Gordeyev showed his skill As a dancer in the last segment of the performance a and even though his leaps might not be quite As High or his movements quite As Graceful As they used to be it is still possible to see Why this Man is called the Quot poet of Gordeyev certainly knows How to pass on his knowledge to Young dancers and As the eight curtain Calls at the end of the show indicated audiences feel he is doing a Fine Job of it.
