Brody the new York times a three year study of non smoking women in five metropolitan areas has fortified earlier conclusions that secondhand smoke increases a spouses risk of lung cancer. Taking into account other possible influences on a woman a cancer risk the study found a 30 percent higher risk of lung cancer if the women a husbands smoked. It also revealed a similar increase in cancer risk associated with other sources of passive smoking in adult life such As work and social settings. That finding runs counter to contentions of the tobacco Industry that the hazards of secondhand smoke outside the Home arc exaggerated. It suggests that frequent exposure to cigarette smoke from sources other than ones spouse is at least As dangerous As having a spouse who smokes. While smoking cigarettes oneself presents by far the greatest risk of cancer the environmental Protection Agency and other researchers have estimated that 7 percent of lung cancers May result solely from passive smoking. Cigarette smoke has also been linked to heart disease in non smoking adults and such respiratory disorders As asthma and pneumonia in children. The previous study published in september 1990 in the new England journal of Medicine described a doubling of lung cancer rates among non smokers who had lived with parents who smoked. It was conducted in upstate new York. The new report was prepared by Fontham of the department of pathology at Louisiana state University medical Center in new Orleans and 11 co authors. Pathologists examined diagnostic material to be sure the women had lung cancer and to verify the Type. Greater care was also taken to assure that the women had been lifelong non smokers. The data represent the first three years of a five year study begun in december 1985 under a Grant from the National cancer Institute.
