Products As a a defective and to claim the . Economy As a a a subcontractor to Japan a is not Only an unacceptable insult to All americans but also truly reflects the widespread japanese attitude toward the american Economy and supposed free Trade. Our governments stance of free Trade at any Cost has put the japanese in the economic Drivers seat. They know that obvious disparities in Trade Laws will be met by indifference or wholly inadequate attempts to Correct the disparities such As president Bush a recent trip to Tokyo. Granted that japanese protectionism is not the Only thing ailing the . Economy and that we must address our foreign debt Low investment savings rate and our educational ills still for a japanese politician to state the above without even mentioning Trade policy is both repugnant and irresponsible. Only Strong legislation by our government will rectify unfair japanese Trade practices. Any country so willing to openly insult americans will not do it by themselves. A capt. David v. Naber Vicenza Italy a a egyptians were african in response to the letter on afro centrism this cyclopean look at history is about As True As the easter Bunny. Like it or not no matter How the egyptians of ancient times painted themselves they were africans and not europeans. This writers overview is but one of the reasons the history books Are full of distortion. Cultural robbery is nothing new. The history books of the world giving Manifest destiny the priority on the Best image making is just the reason Why Christopher Columbus is under scrutiny. Try telling native americans and descendants of african slaves that the introduction of europeans to America was the Best thing that Ever happened. The greeks came to study the pyramids not to build them. Shame on you. A John e. Carter arc Mchaven Germany saving on civilians i recently attended the mandatory a Chain training briefing and listened to the Secretary of defense Tell us Why we would be receiving reductions in the military and civilian work Force. The Bottom line in the briefing was to a save Money and reduce the National debt. I want to offer my ideas in How to assist the government in reductions. The civilians hired in the United states and sent overseas to work have return rights to their old jobs. While overseas the department of the army civilian receives living quarters allowance la tax free rent Home leave free trip the children can Fly to Europe to visit during school summer vacation free and if the is affected by a reduction in Europe a second Chance of employment is available if the option of returning to the old Job is selected. I know some Days who have been Here for 10 to 16 years. The tax free rent they have received could have provided employment for another employee. Do not extend Days do not hire Days until All tourists family members and those persons who get none of these benefits except their salaries and the logistical support that comes with Normal employment Are hired. The tourist and the overseas limited not receiving la work for nothing but a salary pay their own rent get no free trips and no furniture support have no return rights to another Job but still have to extend a tour to stay employed. These folks should be on an indefinite tour until the Job goes away or poor performance warrants their removal. If they lose their jobs they get no free shipment of furniture so they just go Home. Any person not entitled to All these benefits should be the first priority in hiring overseas. They offer cheap labor and Quality work William k. Being former military and a Vietnam vet i greatly respect All individuals who participated in and supported these operations. I have yet to read of another group just As professional motivated and just maybe More patriotic the thousands of federally employed civilians who both deployed with and served alongside military units in both operations. We As logistic assistance representatives Lars occupy a position in the government classified As emergency essential. As such we Are required to deploy support and live with the troops. When the first group of Lars arrived in Southwest Asia unlike the military and government contractors we had no unit to provide for our needs such As Basic subsistence sleeping facilities Etc. We provided for ourselves with Many living in abandoned paint Sheds and on Concrete floors in a Cement production Plant. Those of us who deployed to Southwest Asia did so willingly but not without sacrifices. Our pay contrary to popular opinion was not tax free nor were we paid exorbitant per diem rates in fact we were limited by Federal regulations to maximum per pay period earnings. Most Lars that i know reached this amount several Days prior to the end of the pay period. Therefore the remaining hours were Quot non pay in retrospect we endured the same hardships As the military. We were not pulled Back As the ground War began. Many Lars accompanied units into Iraq and Kuwait. I do not intend to belittle those who fee they received Little or no attention or detract from their statements in any Way. I just feel that the old axiom applies a if you think your lot in life is bad there a always someone who has it a Richard Cornelius Fin than Germany Emore swim coverage i am writing on behalf of the More than 1,000 swimmers and parents of the european forces swim league an age group swimming association with swimmers from age 6 to 18. The Fesl is mostly american but there is one Canadian team and several teams have swimmers from a number of nato nations. This league meets every weekend but for holidays from october to March with hundreds of Young swimmers participating. Aside from the Short mention in the local sports scoreboard Section the stars and stripes never covers swimming. Your paper even ignores the Munich championships which has representatives from every Fesl team from All Over Europe. Please reconsider your current policy and begin covering the swimming events. If nothing else come to Munich in ?T92 and see How Many people participate and support this Effort. There Are some Fine Young swimmers in this league and they deserve As much recognition As any other Young athlete. A Warner Stark Heidelberg Germany editors note a members of our sports Staft can remember covering at least six Fesl championships in recent years. When we have been unable to Send staff members to this event we have arranged to get the results by Telephone. We plan to cover this years championships. 4<izmir coverage unjust in regard to your article on Izmir Turkey in stripes Magazine Jan. 23, i think your picture presentation did not do Justice to this very Beautiful City. I have been associated with Izmir since 1967 and have never witnessed the garbage collection method shown. This task is normally carried out by the Standard refuse collection vehicles. From the limited amount of information available in your photo of a couple of children sharing their Home with a Herd of goats it is difficult to visualize if goats Are in a room or a courtyard. If the goats Are in fact in a courtyard i believe that this would be quite a Normal practice for Safe guarding livestock. I do not however accept that the goats Are sharing a room in the family Home.
