Norwich capital of the county of Norfolk is in the East Anglia Region of England. It grew out of several Small Saxon settlements at a Ford along the River we Risum. By the time the normans conquered England in 1066, Norwich was one of its largest towns. The conquerors built a Castle and a Cathedral a still two of the City s biggest attractions a and set up a new marketplace that s used today. The City has survived invasions riots and attacks. One of the most famous is the Kett rebellion in 1549, during which Robert Kett and his brother led a mob protesting the enclosure of land in Wymondham. They threw Down fences in the area and marched on Norwich presenting several grievances to the local authorities. When the complaints were rejected the angry protesters rioted damaging parts of the City before being subdued by the King s forces and having their leaders hanged. Norwich received More damage when it was heavily bombed during world War ii. Fortunately most of the important historical buildings escaped major damage. Today the Skyline of this City of 1 20,000 is dominated by Norwich Castle and the Spires of 10-some churches. The Quot castles is really the Stone Tower or keep of the original Castle. According to historical accounts construction of the keep started around 1100 and took 20 years to Complete. The remaining part of the Castle was finished sometime during the 12th Century. The Structure was a Royal Castle a property of the King and paid for by him. It was built As a fortress but also served As a Palace where the King could stay when he visited Norwich. It was also the administrative Center for Norfolk and East Suffolk. A Constable appointed by the King was placed in Barge of the Castle and soldiers.
