     European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 12, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Thursday March 12,1992 the stars and stripes Page 21prep Pickin Willetts Munich love affair ending All Good things they say must come to an end. And so it is with Tom Willett and his love affair with Munich. Munich is one of the schools which will be gone after june thanks to that old Devil draw Down. And with its closing will come the end of two decades for Willett and his wife Beverly at Munich High school. A Beverly and i have been very fortunate to have been at Munich for so Many years a Willett said. A we came Here in the summer of 1972, just three weeks before the summer olympics. We went to the games every Day while we were getting settled in the City. A it has been great being Able to teach and coach at Munich for 20 of my 33 years in education a Willett continued. A the kids have been great the City is great the housing area is Beautiful and the faculty and my coaching associates have been tremendous. We obviously will miss  Willett has carved quite a Niche in Munich High schools sports history a winning a Dodds record 232 basketball games and coaching a Cross country team that compiled a dual meet winning skein that stretched Over four years. He also coached Tennis for two years and was Jav soccer coach for eight. There Are very few things about his stay in Munich that Willett would want to change but if he had his druthers he surely would have liked to have won his last basketball game. His Munich basketball team fell five Points Short of winning the Small schools boys title last month a bowing 54-50 to Oesterberg in the championship game in the schools basketball Swan song. A not winning the Small schools basketball tournament this year probably was my biggest disappointment a Willett said. A your big boys Atila Barlas and Rob spans got in foul trouble Early and that made the difference in the game. They were the heart of our team. A it would have been especially great to have won because that was the last basketball game Munich Ever will play a and possibly my last one As a coach. But life goes  Willetts Mustangs reached the championship game of the Small schools tournament three times a and three times they finished second losing to ans Bach in 1980 and to shape three years ago. The Mustangs won their first game in 1988, lost the next one and then won a school record 17 straight. The 1989 championship tussle was one of those games in which something had to give. Shape had a winning string of its own going a and finished that Campaign with a perfect 25-0 Mark. But one of the High spots in Willetts Munich tenure came last year when his team finished last in a South regular season strife but qualified in the Southern regional for the Small schools Field and finished third. That team which finished 8-10 for the year was one of Only three losing campaigns Willett had to endure at the Munich Helm. A we took up that game a few years ago and we re Golf Aho pics now. Golf is Only one of the Willetts hobbies. They re into hiking and travel too and Beverly is an outstanding Bowler who won the european wisc championships in 1974 and 1981. Tom who played two years of basketball at Purdue before being sidelined by an ankle injury has climbed the Zug Spitze twice and they have travelled throughout Europe and the Orient and have made eight journeys to Africa. Tom Only has a few months before he hits 55 and will be eligible for retirement under the 55-years-old-30-years-service provision of government employment regulations. However Beverly has two More years before she attains retirement eligibility. A a a will there be stars and stripes All Europe basketball teams this year not if the coaches interest does no to Start perking with the in office deadline set for saturday Only a amps Susan Harris 12 boys and 13 girls have been nominated by their respective coaches for consideration. Nominations have been received Only from boys coaches at Wiesbaden Wurzburg Giessen Baum older osterholz Berlin Munich Oesterberg and Croughton. Nominations have come Only from the girls coaches at Vicenza Baum older Hahn Augsburg Berlin Bonn International school of Brussels shape and Alconbury. All players must be nominated by their respective coaches to be eligible for All Europe consideration. The stars and stripes has fax facilities which the coaches May use to beat the saturday deadline. The fax number is 06155-601416. Those people using the fax should follow up with pictures of their nominees. A a a its time for Spring sports to burst upon the Dodds scene. And soccer kicks things off saturday with a full slate in the Germany Bennor realm. The big schools were supposed to be Idle this weekend but the schedule has been revised moving the May 16 slate up to this weekend so that the big schools tournaments can be staged May 14-16. The girls tournament will be staged at the a champions pitch the boys at the aaa winners Field. Track and Field makes its debut next week when All the . Teams get together at new River stadium outside London. The Germany Bennor schools swing into action March 28 and the Mediterranean teams Are Idle until april 18. The Star and strip Fordham Eastern Illinois earn Mcaa berths by the associated press Bethlehem a. A Fordham did More than earn an Mcaa tournament bid for the first time in 21 years on tuesday night. The rams also answered a burning question a to their satisfaction a about what it takes to make it. The rams advanced to the Mcaa tournament for the first time since 1971, when they went 26-3 under Digger Phelps and for Only the fourth time in the schools history. The other years were 1953 and 1954. Bucknell coach Charlie Woollum said he hoped his team 21-9 could get an nit bid but he Wasny to optimistic. A they do too much with the computer rankings and those things just Hurt leagues like ours a Woollum said. Fordham and Bucknell promised and delivered a Good Battle. They had split their two previous meetings and tied for the regular season Crown at 11-3 before meeting in the championship. Bucknell trailed 61-53 with 5 41 remaining after a pair of baskets by Sanford Jenkins enabled Fordham to match its largest margin of the game. Chris Simpson who led Bucknell with 17, made a three Point play to spark a rally that got it to 61-60. But Fred Herzog Sank a pair of free throws and scored a Basket and Jenkins added three Points Down the stretch to lift the rams. Fordham fans flooded the court at Lehigh University a Stabler Arena As the rams won the title for the second time in the Patriot leagues two year history. Herzog voted the tournaments most valuable player led Fordham with 17. Jenkins added 16, Sherwin Content had 12 and Jean Prioleau scored 11. Contents contribution was especially important because two Fordham starters Joe Mcgowan and Prioleau fouled out. Patrick King scored 15 a giving him 1,007 career Points a and Mike Bright had 12 for . Eastern Illinois 17-13which earns an automatic bid to the Mcaa tournament trailed Early but went ahead 11-8 on a Long 3-Pointer by David Olson and never trailed again. Illinois Chicago ends its season at lb-14. Olson who had propelled the panthers into the championship with a flurry of 3-pointers monday night was virtually shut Down by Illinois Chicago a defense. However All nine of his Points came from 3-Point Range. Lieb had 17 for Eastern Illinois while West added 13 and Zavien Martin had 10. Brian Hill led the flames with 16 Points while Travon Hughes had 12 and Drennon Jones added 10
