The survivors packed into a Lifeboat designed for 20, endured six hours of freezing water and burning aviation fuel before being rescued by a Swiss freighter. One of the crash survivors the wife of an army lieutenant colonel died before she could be rescued. Her husband scant feet away in the dark never knew she had made it to the safety of the Lifeboat. Foley a first person account of the crash in which 25 people died ran on Page 1 of stripes and was reprinted by the saturday evening Post.
