I Sira Resnor Hijii a entertainment Rush growing More popular As it gets older pm Mon Mcinney the enthusiasm Rush a Alex Lifeson left Teddy Lee and drummer Neil Peart a has for its music remains Strong after 18 years of touring. By Ron Mckinney staff writer Alex Lifeson strolled into a backstage room hours before Rush was to perform at the Frankfurt fest Halle looking like anything but a hard Rock band s Lead guitarist despite his shoulder length Blond hair. He was wearing a stylish Black sweat suit including a sweat shirt with the y inscription Toad s place from new Haven Conn. And his mind was More on finding a Golf course to play during his two Days off in Berlin than on playing the part of Rock Star. After 18 years of touring with the three member group Lifeson should be allowed such luxuries. Quot it s a great Way to waste some time Quot said Lifeson who said he was an 18-Handicap after playing the links for just three years. Quot touring is Boring As hell to be quite honest Quot said the easygoing Lifeson who smiled often As he calmly mulled Over questions during a 20-minute interview. Quot you focus on two hours a Day As being your outlet for Energy and the other 22 hours you re sitting around waiting for those two while Lifeson improves his strokes on the Golf course Rush a with Singer Bass guitarist keyboardist Teddy Lee and drummer lyricist Neil Peart a continues to grow in popularity. The group s 18th album Roll the Bones climbed to no. 3 on the billboard 200 album Chart last fall. Even More importantly Rush s Quot cultish following Quot As Lifeson puts it continues to grow. The 11,000 fans who filled the Frankfurt fest Halle for last month s concert was a significant increase Over the turnouts at Rush concerts of previous years according to the local promoter. Rush filled the Halls everywhere it played on this tour except inexplicably one Date in Berlin. Quot when i look out in the audience maybe not so much in Europe but certainly in North America there s a real mix of 15-year-Olds to 40-year-Olds,&Quot said Lifeson who checks in at 38. The Roll the Bones tour features a balanced mix of a background video and laser show with Rush s personal Brand of hard driving Rock n Roll music. Lee s haunting voice is the final touch to the two hour show. While Lifeson says that Rush in t about to change its music it is influenced by the surge of bands from the Pacific Northwest including Queen Ryche Pearl Jam nirvana and Faith no More. Quot i think they re doing great things Quot Lifeson said of those bands. Quot they be folded that heavy Metal sound of the last 10 years with a dynamic approach to songwriting. And it s a very positive but those groups Are hitting the billboard top 40 singles Chart something considered somewhat taboo by Rush. Quot one of the attractive things about Rush one of the important things to a Rush fan is that we never did have a top 40 hit. And that ties us More closely to our fans i think Quot said Lifeson. And although they like to stay aware of changes in the music world Lifeson said Rush in t about to Compromise the three member hard Rock sound that has kept it successful for almost two decades Quot i think we be always been a band that s been a Little bit on the outside and we be done things the Way we be wanted to do them Quot he said. That does t mean Rush s individual songs Aren t popular. Two of the songs from the group s latest album a the title track Roll the Bones and ghost of a Chance have reached the billboard album Rock tracks top 10. And the fans whether they Are 15 or 40, Aren t about to forget their classic cuts such As Tom Sawyer the spirit of radio and the big Money. Despite All the time they be spent As a touring group Lifeson said the performers Don t feel old. Quot we still have the exuberance and enthusiasm of our youth in what we do Quot he said. But the Outlook has changed drastically from those Early Days when Rush was just a basement band drawing attention around the Block. Quot when you re Young you feel immortal and it s never going to end. You re Only immortal for a limited time and that s through your youth and that s very True. When i think Back on How i Felt in my late teens and certainly in my Early 20s, Man the world was out there and i m going for it. I think As you get older you temper that Quot Lifeson said. And the goals have changed too. At one time Lifeson s life was consumed by Rock n Roll. Today his goals Are vastly different. A real gleam comes to his eyes As Lifeson considers his dreams. Then his smile forms. Quot to play at St. Andrews Pebble Beach and Augusta Quot he a singles 1. Jump Kris Kross 2. Bohemian rhapsody Queen 3. Save the Best for last Vanessa William 4.
