To listings. .27 weather. 11 former Detroit police chief convicted of embezzlement Detroit apr former police chief William Hart was convicted thursday of helping to embezzle $2.6 million from a Specia police fund in part to give his girlfriends lavish gifts. Hart was convicted of two counts of embezzlement and two counts of tax evasion. He was acquitted on one count of tax evasion of conspiracy to embezzle and of obstruction of Justice. Hart could be sentenced to 26 years in Erison. Sentencing was set for aug. 4. Defense lawyer Thomas Cranmer said Hart would remain free until then. He said Hart would Appeal. A Federal jury deliberated Over eight no. I after his february 1991 indictment. The verdict follows a 14-week trial which included the testimony of Harts three former girlfriends numerous top e>1ice officials Fri and irs agents and arts wife Laura who accompanied him to court every Day. Hart and his wife showed no emotion As the verdicts were read. Prosecutors said Hart was a Good policeman who went bad looting $1.3 million from the fund that was set up for undercover investigations and letting a Deputy civilian chief Kenneth Weiner loot another $1.3 million. Cranmer said Hart was an honest Man who was overcome by paperwork and betrayed by subordinates. Hart Federal agents began their investigation of Hart during the late 1980s. From 1982 to 1989, 98 checks to Cash were written from the department secret service fund that Hart controlled. Hart had told Federal investigators that the fund financed numerous department operations but police officials in charge of those projects said they never received Cash. Harts three girlfriends described in testimony How he gave them thousands of dollars in Cash Ana gifts such As fur Coats. But his wife told jurors that it Only seemed he had spent above their Means. In fact she said the couple had saved thousands of dollars kept stashed in boxes in their Home because she managed her household so frugally. Prosecutors maintained she lied for her husband. Police officials described Hart As a policeman with a Knack for undercover investigation and As an Over trusting administrator who ignored paperwork. A department attorney said Hart often authorized conflicting policies and did not know department guidelines. Federal agents told How Hart gave them conflicting stories about secret service fund expenditures. The new study published Friday in the journal epidemiology examined dietary and supplement sources of Vitamin c regularly consumed by 11,348 men and women around the country. These individuals were original participants in a Maior government study of dietary intake and health the first National health and nutrition examination Survey. A the participants diets were first examined in the Early 1970s through personal interviews. They were asked to recall what they had eaten Over the last 24 hours and How often they had consumed various foods in the preceding three months. They were then followed for an average of 10 years to see whether any relationships existed Between dietary intake and causes of death. Researchers found that As Vitamin c intakes increased from below to above the recommended daily allowance there was a steady drop in Overall deaths particularly in deaths from heart disease among both men and women. The protective effect of Vitamin c was especially apparent among men. Those at the highest level of Vitamin c consumption experienced a nearly 50 percent lower rate of death from cardiovascular diseases. For women there was a 35 percent lower rate associated with High Levels of Vitamin c intake. But while the data suggested that Vitamin c might also protect against cancer the findings were inconclusive the researchers reported. Sources of Vitamin c include Citrus fruits strawberries cantaloupes tomatoes watermelons Sweet potatoes cabbage Green Leafy vegetables cauliflower Broccoli Green and red peppers and Snow peas. Key findings men who consume roughly 300 to 400 milligrams of Vitamin c daily have 42 percent lower Overall death rates and 45 percent lower heart disease death rates than men who get less than 50 milligrams. At wednesdays hearing Mahoney told lawyers representing the air Force that they had not dispelled the original appearance of unlawful command influence in Tilghman Scase. The Only evidence they presented wednesday was a March 20 memorandum from Long which he wrote in response to questions from the court. In the memo the support Wing commander defended his decision to order Tilghman a continued confinement citing ring Hmann a conviction on serious charges Long also noted that Tilghman had allegedly threatened the victim violated an order forbidding Contact with her just received his mid month pay and had no ties or family in the area among other Points. During the March trial Mcshane heard arguments on Tilghman a confinement after the staff sergeant was convicted but found no need to keep him locked up the night before sentencing said capt. Brian c. Koza one of Tilghman a defense attorneys during the hearing wednesday. After the March trial Tilghman met with his lawyers for a few minutes and then went to his Home in Ipswich apr i late a Miles from Ben Waters. Tilghman testified wednesday that he answered a Knock at the door later that evening to discover a number of British to ice officers. Tilghman said that the police told him they received a tip that he had escaped from the base. He was then arrested and subsequently turned Over to air Force Security police. Tilghman and his lawyers contend that he was held overnight in the Ben Waters holding facility and was not allowed to Contact his lawyers until the next morning shortly before they went Back to court for the sentencing. Following sentencing Mcshane gave Tilghman 10 Days credit for the overnight confinement. According to Mahoney the Law allows the trial judge to give a two Days for one Day credit. However the judge has the right to increase this ratio. Defense lawyers and Mahoney said wednesday that they were unaware that 3rd air Force Security police officials had conducted an inquiry Over Tilgham a confinement until it was mentioned in court that Day by air Force prosecutor capt. William Schireman. Koza asked for a copy of the report. However Shireman said he had been ordered by 3rd air Force Legal officials not to provide a copy or provide further details. Tilghman had been scheduled to leave May 1 for fort Leavenworth Kan where he is to spend five years in jail
