Harlon Hain and Paul Hamer along with 28 other teams will take off from Geneva in a race that will cover More than 15,000 nautical Miles and last about 24 Days. The event is organized by arc Enciel Rainbow non profit French organization that promotes flying. A i then told my wife i was going around the a week later he met Hamer at an aviation meeting to discuss the Competition. Each was looking for a partner. A a lot of planes have flown around the world but there a never been a race around the world before a Hain said. On their Way to Geneva this week Hain and Hamer stopped at Lakenheath to rest refuel and inspect their plane. They also met staff sgt. Mcclurkin a russian linguist was teaching the duo Basic russian because they will have to land in Russia to refuel during the race. She was on temporary duty in England with her unit. The race begins in Geneva and continues with a series of mandatory stops. The race ends in Cannes France. Participants had to pay a $9,100 entry fee with teams made up of a minimum of two people. They must Fly Only single or twin engine propeller driven aircraft. The first team crossing the finish line wont necessarily win the race. The Crews Are basically racing against themselves because of the variation in size and Speed of the planes. Race organizers will Factor in the maximum Speed of each aircraft in determining race results. A i he planes have to have a minimum Range of 1,200 nautical Miles and do at least 130 knots about 150 Mph at maximum Power. Other than that there a not too Many restrictions a Hamer said. The duo will Fly a Cessna Model 310r specifically purchased and modified for the race. be carrying some of the latest equipment to help in their navigation including a link to a global positioning satellite system. This will allow them to constantly pinpoint their position to within 40 feet. The trip is costing the pair nearly $180,000, which includes the Cost of the Cessna Hain said. Hain 65, retired from the air Force in 1981 after serving almost 37 years. He was in the last aviation Cadet class of world War ii but had his first combat experience during the korean War.
