They included noise making and the wearing of frightful costumes and masks. But with the Coaming of christianity some of the practices were a incorporated into pre lenten celebrations. The origin of the word carnival has been linked to the Spring festival in a ancient Greece when Dionysus the god of wine Rode into Athens on a Carrus Navalis a float built like a ship.
