The Day two Days before the Start of Lent is the High Point of the Fastnacht or carnival which starts nov. 11 and ends on Ash wednesday. It is a Day that has come to symbolize the spirit of the 1,000-year-old City on the Rhine. This spirit was in evidence in 1946, one year after Mainz Sank in ruins in an Allied air raid when the annual Ros Montag Parade wound its Way among wrecked hollow houses and piles of debris. Every year schools shops and offices Are closed As a Quarter million visitors gather with the Mamers to get into the Parade spirit i kicks off at 11 a.m., a 7-mile-Long Kaleidoscope of colors sounds and movement that meanders through the streets. The Narn sche Lindwurm is greeted by crowds waving singing and shouting the mixture of oomph bands spectacular floats pretty majorettes and carnival clubs in traditional uniforms together with individuals in crazy costumes make the special atmosphere of the Mainz Ros Montag Parade.
