Some places forbid tripods or charge a fee for using one others could t care less. Some allow still cameras but not video. Needless to say if museum photos Are important to your travels Check out the rules in Advance. Often museum have one set of rules for their permanent collection but Are More restrictive for visiting exhibitions where the exhibitor usually Calls the shots. First history and science museums such As the smithsonian s american history and natural history museums in Washington tend to be the most open to photographs. You can take photographs to your heart s Content of Dinosaur Bones and the Dinosaur is not going to mind nor the curator. Second Antiquity museums Are often of a mixed mind about visitors cameras. In some cases particularly with sensitive and extremely old tapestries there May be Good reason to want to avoid repeated exposure to electronic Flash. Professionally made reproduction that displays the item perfectly. Or the motive might be profit they want you to Purchase High priced slides or postcards in the gift shop rather than leave with your relatively inexpensive snapshots. Tripods Are often a delicate problem for museums. When an exhibit is crowded it can become an obstacle to other visitors. However most museums offer special permits or uncrowded periods when tripods can be used. The National gallery of Art for example allows hand. Held cameras in its permanent collection but Advance permission is required from the office of photographic services to use a tripod. Photography in Art museums raises other Complex issues. For example suppose you had put five years into a painting. The Canvas is your creative work. Would you want to have 6,000 strangers make a copy with their Point and shoot cameras if pictures Are permitted in a museum be prepared for still More challenges in taking a Good one. Many pieces of Art Are illuminated with spotlights and Tungsten lamps and these will produce that familiar and not always Welcome Orange cast if exposed with Standard color film which is balanced for Daylight. Electronic Flash will Correct the color balance problem and can help improve the image if the museum does not mind. But also keep in mind that most simple Flash units have a limited Range perhaps 15 feet beyond which it is hard to cast enough Light to get a decent picture. Although the film has More Grain it s still a Good idea to select a higher Speed emulsion for inside museums say Iso 400 or 1600, particularly if you Are using a hand held camera without a tripod.
