The Senate appropriations committee unanimously approved the Bill Friday after adding amounts requested by the presi Dent at the urging of governors and lawmakers from flood states. The measure goes to the full Senate and then if passed Back to the House which approved a $3 billion version tuesday. The measure approved Friday by. The Senate appropriations com Mittee would provide $1.35 billion for crop losses $2 billion for disaster Relief activities of the Federal emergency management Agency and $235 million to the army corps of engineers for repair of levees and other flood control works. There also would be $175 million for Highway and Bridge repair. The emergency Agency provides direct Aid to individuals and families for such needs As temporary housing and repairs. The Bill offers a variety of other Aid including funds for temporary cleanup jobs Money to rebuild communities and businesses and help with Public health and environmental emergencies. Some of the spending would be used to subsidize $500 million i Loans. The crop disaster Aid in the Bill also would cover other losses such As from the drought in the South East although the measure is Struc tured to Benefit areas like the mid West where a disaster has been declared. Michigan congressman succumbs to cancer grand rapids Mich. A -. Rep. Paul b. Henry a Republican whose had work and moderate views made him a rising Star in the National gop died saturday nine months after being diag nosed with brain cancer. He was 51. Henry was found to have incurable brain cancer in october after complaining of headaches while campaigning Lor his fifth term. He died at his grand rapids township Home according to a statement released by his office. He faced cancer without fear of death and he and his family were inspirations to the thousands of people throughout the nation who became aware of his situation the statement said. On oct. 21, doctors removed most of a 3-Inch malignant tumor from the right frontal lobe of Green s brain. Despite the surgery and prognosis the popular politician easily won re election two weeks later. Thousands of letters of support poured into his Home and offices. Although Henry s personal physicians initially expressed optimism cancer experts said that patients with Henry s Type of cancer glib Latoma multiform sur Vive an average of about a year and that fewer than 5 percent survive five years. In the months that followed the diag Nosis Henry his family and staff Mem Bers tried to remain upbeat and did not address the possibility of his resignation. But by late Spring Henry was mostly bedridden. By Midsummer his staff said he could not communicate and they were not sure if he recognized friends. He was first elected to Congress in 1984. In 1990, Henry was named one of the 11 rising stars by the National journal. He was said to be a Strong contender for the 1994 race against democratic sen. Donald w. Riegle or. Henry s District was in Western lower Michigan and included grand rapids. A Chicago native Henry graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois and then served with the peace corps in Ethiopia and Liberia for two years before earning a master s degree and doctorate from puke University in Durham .
