Housing area a dump i live in the Frankenthal housing area outside Mannheim. I have never lived in a place quite like this before. People Here treat it like the City dump instead of a place to live. Any Day of the week you can find the dumpsters filled to overflowing. Open bags of trash will be next to the dump sters and the contents strewn every where. Some of them Aren t even full. The bags Are just placed on top and no attempt is made to push them Down in Side. /. Dog fees Are everywhere. People can t take an extra minute to pick it up and dispose of it properly. No it s easier to leave it there where somebody else can step in it. I have a dog and it does no take that Long to pick it up. This housing area is an embarrassment to anyone with a conscience. Some of the people Here have utter disregard for other people s right to a clean place Tolive. Spec. Eric Shirley Frankenthal Germany v ". / gun control Avon t work i too believe that something must be done to curb violence and bloodshed in America. However most gun owners do not own firearms for they Gener Jally possess firearms for self defense or for Hunting and very few Hunters Hunt exclusively for sport. A Well armed militia " i.e., an armed citizenry such As the minutemen was not intended to defend against an armed invader. To paraphrase Thomas Jeffer son in the federalist papers the Pri Mary purpose of a militia is to protect the american Public from political tyranny such As that which we fought against in the american finally prohibition of any sort has Al ways proved futile in America. Further restricting the free ownership of firearms will Only serve to place All the firepower in the hands of criminals of All sorts. The Law abiding citizenry will heed these Laws. Criminals on the other hand have already displayed a Lack of respect for Law and order. They will find a Way to possess weapons whether Legal illegal taxed or otherwise restricted thus placing an increased Burden on our already overloaded Law enforcement and court system. Enough is enough but gun control is not the answer. Leonard Stewart Baum older Germany editor s note the Holiday season has produced a Short age of letters so this feature has been abbreviated. ". Rush in t racist Over the past few weeks i have read Many ridiculous letters in reference to Rush Limbaugh and what the writers think he believes. I did t bother to Cor rect them because they can hear for themselves this month what he believes recently however i have noticed that almost every Day there is at least one let Ter calling the Man a racist. This is in True. -. I have listened to Rush off and on for almost three years watched his television show on occasion and read both of his no. 1 Best seller books and have never heard seen or read anything that could remotely be called racist. Certainly he has had his Dis agreements with the National association for the advancement of coloured people a act and with the Rev. Jesse Jackson but it has stemmed fro their left Wing politics not race. Chief warrant officer 2 Frank Buzzard Wiesbaden Germany Tough opponents needed i have to respond to the recent letter whining about West Virgin not playing for the National championship. When the bowl picture solidified Dur ing the final weeks of the season the associated press had Nebraska no. 1, Flor Ida state University no. 2, and West Virginia third. The can Usa today poll had flu no. 3, behind West Virginia and Nebraska. The Dart coalition Point system thus put flu no. 2, which is Why Nebraska and flu were playing for the National championship Jan. 1 in the Orange bowl no Deal was made to get flu in. Most polls rank on records alone disregarding the Quality of a team s opponents As is the Case with can Usa today. The a takes a team s schedule into account which is Why both Nebraska and West Virginia lingered near the Bottom of the top 10, even with unblemished records until the last few weeks of the season when notre Dame beat flu. Take a look at the bowl schedule and you la see Alabama Louisiana state University Miami Florida and North Carolina All teams beaten by flu. And All still in the top 25. There s Only one Way to ensure a shot at a National championship the school s and athletic director and head coach have to schedule their teams with top notch opponents then they have to beat them. I Galen Maxwell Dhahran saudi Arabia commentary Busy lives put Cork on Champagne moments by Susan Reimer she noticed the bottle of Champagne in the Bottom of her refrigerator and Sud Denly it occurred to her that it had been there for exactly a year. In t it a shame my Friend says. A whole year has passed and we have had neither the occasion to drink it nor there is a bottle of Champagne in the Bottom of my refrigerator too. And it has been there longer than i would like to admit. Like my Friend i wondered Why so much time had passed without a Cele bration. Looking Back Over the year there were opportunities i guess. Reasons Why you might pop the Cork and tip the foaming bottle toward a couple of your nicest glasses. Clink them with a spouse or a memo rate the moment. Why had we no taken those opportunities list we keep and for every chore we Cross off we add three to the Bottom. When did we get this Dutiful when did All the spontaneity leave us when did the Champagne moments end Champagne has come to symbolize big time celebrations and so i guess there is some hesitation to break it out for life s victories the wallpaper is up the t in is painted or the deck is finished or life s smaller occasions a sister vis its a Friend drops by with Good news. But As another Friend says this might be As Good As it we should be a voting the Good times in these times. Trouble or changes wait for us around the next Bend in the Road. But like All of you i am tired of people telling me to Stop and smell the roses. That admonition is starting to sound like just one but maybe if i got pregnant says Friend. I m not sure though really. Tom to go. Too much to be clone. There is this some a what would it take for you to drop everything and open a bottle of Nam pagne i asked around and it was strange to listen to the hesitation in the voices of my friends. What would it take a 1don t know that we have an fewer Occa Sions than we once did. But we Are so caught up in the daily a new House a new Job a big promo Tion say other friends. But those Occa Sions Are fewer for those of us settled into our Middle years. Our transitions have been made and we Are hard at the business of staying in one place earning a living and raising kids. We have an unopened bottle too says another Friend. She sounds almost shocked at the discovery. Then she offers this scenario a special Holiday. The kids Are in bed. Your daily Dru Geries Are Over and you Are sitting Down together on a particularly meaningful Wavelength talking about feelings instead of a list of chores. That would be a Good time. But you could never plan that. C the Baltimore Sun anyway so i m Meltln thk6 6torj5s to the Guyson 7hb pita ii ally a you Uruu so i m thinking what the by.
