Other areas that Aspin had asked the services to consider opening to women such As air defense artillery and multiple launch rocket system and other Field artillery units pose More of a problem he said. Some jobs in air defense artillery units May be opened but women will probably continue to be shut out of Mars and Field artillery units he said. The new policy drafted by the services under the direction of Edwin Dorn assistant Secretary of defense for personnel and readiness will not take effect until oct. 1 so that the defense department has time to Brief Congress on its plans. In announcing the new policy Aspin stopped Short of giving the services specific instructions on which combat sup port jobs they should consider opening.
