Also known As the interscholastic academic games the Competition is patterned after the one time to game show Colleg bowl about 100 ninth through 12th-graders from 19 department of defense dependents schools competed in a fierce two Day contest thursday and Friday in Baum Holder. The Competition tested students knowledge of mathematics science language and humanities. I like winning said Michael Chandler Captain of the Hanau team. Last year we did t do Well at Chandler a Junior and three year Veteran of the games often was first to the Buzzer As he led his Tea to Victory in the 13th annual brain bowl. The Hanau team consisted of Chandler Desmond Butler a senior Sophomore Kai Wiessmann freshman Karel Chizek and alternate Dan Ryan a Junior. The teams were made up of a student from each of the four grades and an alternate who could come Romany of the grades. According rules one student from each Grad had to play the first round. In the final round Hanau easily outdistanced Vilseck High school. X they were really fast said Vilseck s Captain Sarah Kinney. They were the Only team that beat us. Both times we lost were to Kinney a senior has competed in similar brain con tests since the seventh Grade. Teams competed in preliminary matches and win ners advanced to the final rounds of Competition held at Baum older High school s theater. The finals began with Ramstein facing Frankfurt for fifth and sixth place. Ram Stem took fifth 160-135. Playing for third an fourth place last year s Winner Giessen trumped Pitburg 150-80. Hanau s 175-65 Victory Over Vilseck secured the top Slot. Questions were Worth 10 Points with Bonus question adding 5 Points. The top team took Home a trophy and its members each received a plaque. Hanau s competitors most of them new to the team said they went to the contest expecting to have fun. Chandler and Ryan were the Only returning members. Being Able to Deal with pressure was a key to Victory Chandler said the Wiesbaden match came Down to one question that we had to contest he said referring to a preliminary round match. We had a Good time during the last match but we were taking it too seriously against of the 19 schools that participated 18 were fro Germany. The other was shape High school in teau Belgium. Mike Shelley coordinator for the Dodds talented and gifted program in Europe said that if a Way can t be found to bring students from other areas the games will be cancelled. He noted that it would Cost up to $2,500 to bring a team from a place like Bahrain. It s a real big thrill because my school has never really gotten anywhere but i almost feel guilty about getting the award because other team members Armstrong in literature and Art Kinney said.
