That show Long the University of Maryland University College has been offering the Opportunity of higher education to american service members their families and department of defense civilians overseas. Of october 31,1949, the first Maryland classes were held at newly established education centers in Berlin Frankfurt Heidelberg Munich Nymberg and Wiesbaden under the sponsorship of University of Maryland s College of special and continuation studies later renamed University College. Seven faculty members from College Park journeyed to Germany in response to a department of defense request for educational opportunities for soldiers stationed overseas. While the role of the . Military in Europe has changed since 1949, the role of the european division has remained the same to provide a major american University education to those who desire it but Aren t living in the United states. ". A within a year of its inception the fledgling Maryland program flourished and grew to 47 centers in Germany great Britain France and North Africa. In 1950, a two year residential Campus opened in Munich with 45 students. The Campus moved to Augsburg m 1992, and relocated to Mannheim earlier this year. The european division offers Bachelor of arts and Bachelor of science degree programs in a variety of disciplines. Maryland awarded its first Bachelor s degree in Europe in 1951. In May 1994, 862 students received a . Or b.s., bringing the total number of Bachelor s degree recipients to 17,290. Aji associate of arts degree program began 1969. Now offered in fourteen disciplines the first degrees were awarded in 1971, since then a total of 20,524 associate degrees have been awarded to european division students. In 1993, a University of Maryland system consortium began offering graduate programs at Over 30 locations in six countries. Master s degrees Are offered in Public administration business administration and management information systems through Bowie state University. A master s degree in counselling and personnel services is available through this University of Maryland at College Park. Presently the european division offers courses at 100 locations in 17 countries and in addition to the traditional classroom environment provides unique educational opportunities to students through Field study courses and me open University program. The faculty of seven lecturers who came in 1949 to give the european division its Start has grown to 1,000 who presently teach for the program. The Maryland program in Europe has kept in step with the forces of the european command Over the past 45 years. From the beginning the availability of High Quality University education has been the most distinctive hallmark of the program. That Quality will continue As time goes on.
