Itsu Kushima near famed Miyajima shrine the australian army is carry ing on an experimental school which Points a new direction for future officer training. I the school is called the Royal military College Wing and serves As k local Annex to the famed Royal Mill f tary College in Canberra the West \ Poi flt of Australia. Its purpose How Ever is not that of any military col lege it is to assess the suitability of applicants for commission in the re Gular army a procedure which at present Only the australian army is carrying  is no teaching As such instead a number of tests of the most Basic sort Are Given first to determine the ability of the applicant As an instructor or Leader and second to deter mine his degree of officer like Quali  candidates at present taken solely from cof s infantry troop of the australian army needless to say must be in top condition and of the highest Caliper to pass the rigid qualifications of the school. A quota of 30 officers is chosen for the six week training course being replaced at that time the officers re turning to duty if they pass As fully accredited members of the regular australian  their training period they take a number of written tests which treat such subjects As minor tactics military Law administrative subjects map Reading staff duties and Many others. The theory Here tested. However is soon actually put into practice Field work under Field conditions being one of the most important parts of the course. Though most of the Field tests Are in the realm of the classified a hypothetical Case May be imagined to show the extremely interesting Way the training is . Most of the material comes from actual local problems posed by the past War. Thus a squad of men will receive word that a military official in a key position has been captured and taken somewhere on the main land across the Channel from the is land. They have been landed on the Island As a spec Al task Force wit a is escue their objective. They have say food and water for Only a Day and have but one boat and Only so much ammunition. They Are to be picked up and carried to safety at a certain time from the Island. Their assignment is to Rescue the official impersonated by one of their number taking it easy on the Mainland and return in time for the Rescue ship. J hey Are Given but the Barest essentials information by word of Mouth a few Aerial views of the probable locality and other slight information. Passing this particular test will consist in duplicating actual conditions and in  the official. The instructors will notice which Man takes the Lead which Man makes the Neces sary deductions and the group graded accordingly. This and Many other tests make the program of the school one of the most fascinating going. The surroundings should make it one of the most popular. The Headquarters building is located in the old no a hotel formerly a japanese officers7 club which is situated by the seashore in a Cool Grove of Pine. There Are four Tennis courts As Well As Beautiful sailing and swim Ming facilities. The hours of the course Are from 8 30 in the morning to 12 30 2 to 4 in the afternoon and 7 30 to 9 30 in the evening. The Fri Day evening session is Cut Short so that the saturday and sunday holi Days May be taken full advantage of most of the candidates taking Adan Tage of the time to visit families in cof Headquarters Only an hour s ferry ride away.
