Pacific Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 03, 1948, Tokyo, Tky The Mermaid stories two major film studios in England and America have both produce movies of an identical and bizzare nature both Are concerned with Mer maids which subject has certainly rarely reached film before. Both Are playing in America at present and both will be released concurrently i Tokyo this week later to play the entire Fec circuit. The British film is named Miranda based on a popular play of the same name and concerns a husband who took a Mermaid Home with him kept her in the same House As his wife and was caused no end of trouble because of it. From an originally Clever play an exceedingly Clever and diverting movie has been made which skips lightly from the pathetic to the Bawdy without Ever losing its Grace. The american film or. Peabody and the Mermaid is not so Clever but seems a great Deal More interesting in its implications a similar Story a Man catching the Mermaid while fishing is presented but the accent is on the misunderstandings of other people none of whom Ever actually see the Mermaid and the end while Happy in a conventional sense is Al most tragic. The similarities Are numerous but superficial. In both films the Hus bands Are men rather weary of their wives who suddenly come upon the unexpected and unnerving spectacle of an actual Mermaid. Both wives misunderstand and eventually both misplaced mermaids return to the sea. As the husbands Griffith Jones and William Powell Are equally satisfactory. Their characters Are treated quite differently however. Jones is a Young doctor sure of his wife his. Health and profound Well being. Powell is a banker turning fifty no longer so agile and what s More profoundly unsure of himself. The two wives react quite differently. Google Withers in the eng Lish film is a typical smart wife who though unsure of exactly what is go ing on eventually in a very funny scene manages to guess the truth. Irene Hervey in the american film is just Plain typical. She is the expected exponent of decency and morality a Stock character but one most necessary to the film. In both the famous song of the Mermaid or Siren figures. The Bri Tish film rather uninspired title song by Temple Abby Surig Only Dur ing the credit titles and there inexplicably by Jean sablon. The american film uses music to much greater effect. The score by Robert Emmet plan is quite haunting. It might also be noted that in the american product there Are more1 underwater scenes and the Tail is much better constructed. The mermaids Are of course the focal Point of each film. In the British film the creature is Glynnis Johns. She talks and carries on Brilliant re Partee attempts to make All the men sings and casts remarks at the wife such As you be hated me Ever since the first Day i set Tail in this House. The american film boasts Ann Blyth surely one of the most Beautiful women living. She does t say a word but she does t heed to. The greatest difference is however in the treatment of essentially the same theme. The English film is a comedy pure and simple a drawing room comedy since most of it takes place in the modern equivalent of the drawing room. The dialogue a stagy Clever and fast the funniest lines would t pass the Hollywood Board of censors. But it is after All Only a Light comedy., while not so immediately satisfying the Hollywood film actually works on a much larger scale and in so doing commits More blunders but manages to suggest something More than Light comedy. The husband is going on fifty and feels it strongly. He by Accident captures a creature who cannot speak who has never seen a Man before and who Falls in love with him. They have a number of tender moments together during which he tells her about himself revelling in his Nev audience who does t care that is growing old. Eventually however the wife suspecting entirely the wrong thing leaves him and the police thinking her murdered by her husband close in. The Mermaid and the husband escape to an Island from whence he plans to Fly with her to a desert spot far away from All civilization for by this time he too has fallen in love. The police find him but As they Are carrying him away he again hears her song and dives into the water to find her. One of the most poignant scenes in the Siovie is of the Mermaid pulling him deeper and deeper into the water. Some of the credit for the Beauty and pathos of this film which in less heavy hands could have been a me Morable idyll goes to William Powell who manages very Well to subtly suggest the dissatisfaction of an aging Man and his renewed Ardour at the first sign of love. Most of the credit however goes to Ann Blyth who without speak ing a word conveys the impress do of an incredibly Bye in Annial pure and innocent Dev Oid of All knowledge of Why identical subjects in a rarely tried form the comedy allegory should suddenly appear from two film studios May or May not be a sign of the times but for entertainment purposes it is beside the Point. With both films it is a matter of take your Choice and pay your Money you won t be disappointed in either.
