Pacific Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 10, 1948, Tokyo, Tky When i arrived in Tokyo a year ago my husband said to me please be careful what you say to people Over Here. Remember you re a what s wrong with being a dependent i asked bristling immediately. I was proud of myself. State Side stuff was i fresh off the ship attired in the usual new arrival s cos tume of Long Long dress shoes bag and gloves All Matching in a devastating Shade of Pink and to top off All this elegance the last word in hats Complete with artificial roses and floating a fetching veil. A self appointed ambassador of Good will from the states i Felt so sure of myself so fashion Wise so eager to Tell the poor isolated occupation Aires about what was news in the states and what was being worn. I at present How Many rooms did my family have had i stayed in a rest hotel when i arrived and if so which hotel and for How Long did i realize that because of dependents poor weary Days had no place to go when they had a leave what did i think of the pm and was i aware that dependents beat Days to the cosmetic counter and left nary a lip stick or a Jar of cold Cream for the Long suffering Days was there any truth to the rumours that 1 dependents buy a can of soup at the commissary take a taste and then throw it out their hotel window 2 dependents take Beauty Baths in commis sary Ginger ale 3 some dependents make festoons from Rolls of toilet paper to decorate their apartments i answered questions As carefully As possible and to the More serious say hid. I m from Oklahoma Civ j by Are we re going to a party with some people from my office tonight said Tom and i do want you to make a Good impression. Don t Wear a hat keep in mind the fact that you Are a dependent and that everything you say will be held against you. It won t be too difficult tonight really just Don t mention the hotel we live in ration cards food the pm and commissary or dependent i promised to be Good and not say the wrong things. But when i arrived at the party i realized immediately that i was in enemy territory. Several determined Days male and female swooped Down on me and like the Junior Gestapo members that they were indicated a chair for me to sit in and i . What else could i do. I was outnumbered. If there were any other dependents Jare sent they had taken cover and had no in Tention of backing me up. The questioning and Cross questioning began almost immediately. I say almost " immediately because first they gave me a Strong drink to loosen my Tongue. I must say that there was no Shilly shalling. They got to the Point right away. Just what kind of a hotel was i living in Here to stay charges i made answer that i had not seen any cans of soup hurtling out of hotel windows or Ginger ale Bubble Baths or toilet paper festoons As yet. The people who did t ask questions stood Back and stared at me with definite animosity. One girl leaving the party at eight p.m., said sweetly sorry i have to leave so Early dear but we women who work for a living must get our on our Way Home i asked Tom How i had made out. Not too bad he replied nervously but next time Don t mention s the matter with Bath salts they sell it at the pm but Only dependents have tubs to soak thanks for the tip i said weakly. But i still can t see Why it s such a crime to be a dependent in my husband assured me that i would understand about dependents after i had been Here awhile. My curiosity was aroused. From that Day Forward i slavishly devoted myself to an intensive study of Tokyo dependents. Material for my Case studies was not hard to find All i had to do was talk to neighbors or visit the pm and commissary or ride by Eleanor Hicks a bus. Dependents Are everywhere and most of them Are More them will ing to talk about themselves and their problems. Also More than willing to talk about their problems Are the Days who think dependents cause All the Trou ble in Tokyo. When pressed they will admit that their main objections to dependents Are that they take up a Foo much space in trains and hotels and have More privileges than Days. Such As a full commissary card. The key that opens the magic Moun Tain of goodies sold Only commissary including Ginger ale not to mention material for decorative fes. Toons. They also state that the non working dependent snaps up All the juicier bargains in the pm before they can get there. Another com Mon complaint is that dependents have it too freed by maids from housework they play All Day. So think most Days anyway. Since sunday is the big play Day it would seem that even god is on the Side of the dependents. If there is any doubt in your mind As to this just remember How Many of our big rain Days come on. Sunday. However this is one Point that can hardly be taken up with Scap. After a year s study of dependents i am ready to present my findings. Contrary to opinion dependents Are actually human beings. And when you separate the wheat from the chaff you actually discover that there Are some very Good dependents some very bad dependents and a lot of middling dependents. With Good and bad characteristics the group into Whity most of us fall. There Are Many dependents who work for Scap and Are neither fish nor fowl As far As this article goes because they do hot come in for As much criticism As their non working Sisters. There Are some very Busy dependents such As mrs. Me Arthur for in stance and some very a Busy dependents such As mrs. Shopping hound whose problems we shall now discuss. Mrs. Shopping hound whom we v shall consider Type a dependent be cause there Are so Many of her can every Day be found in a line at the pm buying anything that happens to be Foy Sale. Supplied with numerous ratio i gifts and a seemingly inexhaustible Supply of Money mrs. Shop Ping hound is ready to buy. And buy
