Pacific Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 10, 1948, Tokyo, Tky Mighty it. Asama one of the world s most Active volcanoes temperamental As a woman has 1 changed her mind and won t erupt after All unless she changes her mind again. I Asama put Over a fast one. She caused the jitters in the seismological instruments so that even the scientists avoided the hot spots. Then she did her stuff strictly on the quiet. It was t until a japanese scientist Takeshi Inagami of Tokyo univer sity earthquake research Institute took a look from the top of the Crater that the truth came out. Inagami has been watching Asama on and off for the last 15 years and knows every crease and Crevice of the Bald lava Ash covered Mountain. Professor Inagami had been wait ing a Long time to get to the Crater but the danger in the last few months has been too great. The seismological instruments have been recording a steady series of Micro earthquakes within the Volcano. He got his first hint that he could Start when the Micro earthquakes ceased entirely. I now he thinks an eruption will be. Long related. Possibility of an eruption in the immediate future. A heavy crust has formed Over the top of the lava indicating that the show s Over for the time being at least. Moreover All activity has stopped in the seismological recording apparatus in the Observatory at the foot of the Volcano. Last May and for weeks afterwards there was notice Able activity within the Crater augmented by frequent Brief but marked Earth tremors in the Kar Izawa re Gion. These quakes also have ceased. In june and july of this year lieutenant Collier 1st cavalry pro Vost marshal at Kar Izawa reported the Seismograph recorded numerous Micro earthquakes. At this time according to Inagami the Tilting of the Earth s surface was remarkable. The 50-meter Rise Iff the lava occurred during july and August it is believed. It was during that period that an eruption was believed to have been imminent. It now appears Inagami said that the slow Rise in the lava bed tended to dissipate the Force of an eruption. Whether or not there is any rela Tion Between the phenomenon of Asama and tha recent disastrous mighty Asama s Bak Yard has been considered a Good place to avoid and accordingly has been declared off limits by the Provost marshal of the 1st cavalry division As indicated in the photo above left. Above right is a close up of the seismographic instruments used for recording Earth tremors at the Kar Izawa Observatory operated by or. T. Inagami Volcan Logist and member of the japanese Bureau of earthquake research Tokyo University. Inagami discovered a secret Mac no one had suspected the molten lava has risen 50 meters inside the Crater in four months. Last May when the Seismograph at the Mountain was doing nip ups and an eruption was expected momentarily the molten lava had risen to a depth of 250 meters irom the Edge of the Crater. Inagami Dis closed he measured the depth and thus discovered the 50 meter Rise. Inagami concluded that the Rise of the lava is halted and with it All at i Yukui cannot be conclusively proven but Inagami thinks not. However he believes the quake at Fukui was caused by the upward Force of a subterranean lava flow. The severity of the quake he said was caused by the extreme thickness of the Earth s surface there. Inagami believes that quakes and eruptions Are analogous that they Are caused by the explosive Force of molten lava near the Center of the Earth. This action he said May be a Rise or a fall. Officers of the 1st cavalry brigade Are shown below during an inspection tour of Inagami s Observatory at Kar Izawa. At left the Volcano Logist explains to it. T. M. Although the instruments recorded enough tremors Early last summer to predict an eruption it failed to come. At right below col. Auger is shown lava formations in the Crater of it. Asama
