European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 03, 1948, Darmstadt, Hesse Reporter in route Snake Park is a combination zoo arid research Laboratory port Elizabeth be of the sights of South Africa and a sight 4o see it is is the Snake Park at port. Elizabeth. Port Elizabeth is a bustling Little port that serves much of South Africa Eastern province and is expanding into a major Industrial City with tremendous Snake Park is at once a zoological Garden and an important med ical service. South Africa teems with reptiles Many of them among the deadliest poisonous snakes in the world such As the cobra and the Mamba. For that reason it must have plentiful supplies of Snake serum and the Basic ingredient of this the venom itself can Only be got from the snakes. Farmers and others who live in the country where snakes Are More numer Ous Arp urged to Send snakes alive tothe Park rather than kill them outright. Here the venom is milked from the fangs into Glass containers and becomes the base for. Antitoxin. The snakes for display purposes Are kept in a Large open Garden. They Are separated from Che Public by a Moat of about a foot in Width and a walkabout four feet High. Inside they Glide and swim about with perfect Freedom. All of Africa s poisonous snakes were there today except the Mamba the deadliest Snake on the continent. Unless the Mamba s bite is treated immediately the victim is dead within ten or fifteen minutes. Most snakes., indeed most wild animals will not attack unless provoked. The Mamba however has been known to attack without provocation that reason is the most feared Snake in South Africa. The next most dangerous South african Snake is the cobra. This is a Beautiful Snake and the Garden has some Beautiful specimens. The Cape cobra occurs. In a variety of color ranging from Cream Light Brown dark Brown speckled to Black. The prettiest were Lovely Golden yellow in Shade an about six or eight Leet in length. The attendant Freddie a native boy. Is Able to handle the snakes without being bitten usually. He wears heavy leather gauntlets and putters As Wellas goggles to guard against the ring Hal snakes which spit venom four to five feet. Freddie s More famous predecessor Johannes handled the snakes for Twenty six years before retiring two years ago. Johannes was bitten scores. Of times but Riever became immune and each time had to be treated As anyone ele would. Freddie has been bitten several times but seems to like his Job. The cobras Are the most fascinating. They strike from a position with about one third of their length in the air gently swaying their hoods extended. Their Heads follow Freddie whenever he is near although the rest of the body remains coiled and sometimes the seem almost to turn All the Way around. When he comes they strike at him their fangs exposed. Another dangerous Snake is the puff adder which resembles in appear Ance the markings of rattlesnakes. The puff adder is not so Long and slender As the cobras Are and it seems to be a heavier Snake. The puff adder is easily recognizable because of its Flat head which seems triangular in shape. This Snake strikes from what seems to be a a shape it recoils and then lunges Forward Asif a Spring inside had been released. Fortunately the venom of this Snake absorbs More slowly than that of the cobra or Mamba and it is usually pos sible to save the victim of a bite. Johannes was Able to handle the snakes so gently that he could wind the " most vicious snakes around his Neckband handle them quite freely without in most cases being bitten. Freddie is not quite so chummy with the picks them up by the Tail and holds them that Way at Arm s length so that their deadly fangs Are definitely Well away from even the protected parts of his arms and legs. The Snake handling by these attend ants is hot done for show purposes. It has a practical value in educating the people of South Africa As to which of the. Various snakes Are deadly and which harmless. Among the other snakes is the do Slang a poisonous Snake but not so dangerous because it Seldom bites a human. Another name i like is Kaap Steker. This is a slightly venomous Snake but it is not fatal to men or cattle. The ring Hals which spit their venom resemble a cobra in appearance having the same sort of Hood. They Are gorgeously coloured with patches of shiny Lack interspersed with White. When i was at the Park i saw one Snake try to eat another. They Swa Lowall their food alive and there evidently was a struggle going on internally. The Snake swallowing and the one being swallowed were both puff adders. The Cannibal had his victim about two thirds swallowed when the attendant Freddie discovered the situation. He gave the attacker a slight tap on the Tail and in an instant the victim was disgorged. Both snakes quickly made off neither apparently the worse Fortis experience. Commander Attilio Gatti a Veteran of years in Africa and Leader of Many expeditions into the Interior told me he once was bitten twice by the same cobra. He explained that the cobra Isone of the few snakes which can strike More than once. Fortunately Gatti had natives Handy who knew How to handle the situation and came through this double barrelled attack but he still " bears the Fang Marks. The serum comes from horses which had been immunized by injecting them with Small quantities of cobra and puff adder venom. The cobra and. Puff adder verious cover All snakes in South Africa. The cobra Type venom acts on the nerve and the puff adder venom on the blood. The serum no produced contains both and therefore is Good for any bite in South Africa. There also Are two types of fangs. The puff adder cobra and Mamba have hollow fangs like hypodermic Needles. The Boom Slang and Kaap Steker have grooved fangs. All shakes have Reserve fangs As the regular ones usually get blunted or broken. Thering Hals. And Black necked cobras prefer to spit. They Force two thin streams of venom through their Fang directing it at the eyes of their i opponent. J some of these tropical snakes look j rather Lovely As they Speed through the a water or Sun themselves on the grass in the Park. Later with my impressions of the Snake Park still vivid i stepped out of a Telephone Booth and nearly died of fright. At my feet was what first seemed to be a writhing Snake. On closer examination it turned out to be a piece of rope. James Powers the East West dilemma continued from Page 16 Init ively with us the question of sub Carpathian had the impression that Mikolaj Czyk was convinced of the necessity for immediate negotiations. But it was Clear to me that he did not believe he could dominate the London poles and oblige them to treaty the first of its kind during the War at least partially broke the Barrier Between the soviet Union and the Western world. The latter regarded our action As a sort of Experiment a test at the beginning there was a rather Sharp controversy about it. Conservatives in England an America and some elsewhere threw themselves upon us. We went through a rather difficult phase especially since it soon became obvious that the opposite policy of the poles led first to great complications among the allies themselves. Since the first world a i have always worked for a rapprochement Between Europe and the soviet Union. I believe today perhaps even More than before that if the y had come to a Mutual understanding Iri time there might not Ever have been a second world War. Besides the soviet Union itself has changed fundamentally since its beginnings. It will be obliged to change More in the Progress of time. It is natural that the soviets should ask others for understanding1 and it is equally natural that the soviets must show the same under standing and the same tolerance. Other Wise the whole situation will Lead once again to War a More terrible War than the course Many serious Dis appointment for us from our experiences with the soviet Union. Many in private and Public a charged that Benes was in too much of a German propaganda poured out fire and Brimstone telling our people at cobra expands neck bares fangs then misses its strike terror House continued rom Page 19 and of course i can t finance an airline Ifor you or offer you a luxurious what the Dickens has got into you. Ellen Stan t try to Tell me you Haven t fallen for Olivia after the performance you be sput on tonight. I m surprised that you finally remembered that you presupposed to have brought me to the party and not m a fully sorry but i could t help myself. It in t i who is doing the chasing but she. I be been trying All evening to get away from her so i could be with you. After All i can t insult the girl can i i like her of course but what i said the other night that i m in love with you still they were just starting to leave the dance floor when a uniformed Page touched Stan . Beg Pardon sir he said but or. Tark would like to see you. In his office if you can spare the turned and looked at Ellen. Want to come along with me he probably wants to talk business with you come on along i have no secrets from big fat Man greeted them warmly. I just noticed that you were Here he explained. It s a pleasure miss fair to see you again. I Hope everything downstairs is All right without waiting for an answer Tark turned to Robinson. After having flown with you i would t be satisfied with any other it s a Deal As of right now you re on my pay Roll and i Don t think you la Ever regret it. I demand service but i m willing Home that i had sold my Homeland to Stalin and betrayed the in London we were receiving news from Home saying that the major Ity of our people not communist fully understood and approved our attitude. In Short they understood the. Problem of european postwar policy. I we were asked then and Are still asked today Are we a nation of easterner Western culture our action during the War aroused in the West the impression that we were preparing Sud Denly to move Over to a so called East Ern culture. However i believe that the. Question has always been and is today presented incorrectly. It was and is not a question of changing orientation. The cultural development of a nation is not a thing which can be changed like a coat from one Day to the next or from one year to the next. The Cul Tural development of a nation consists of values which take whole centuries to create and which Only gradually an very slowly change. Thus for me the question West breast is consciously and clearly re solved by the reply West and Only in this sense did we sign with the soviet Union in Decem Ber 1943." l believe that both social political systems the new postwar democracy and the soviet socialist system can live together without rivalries and Hostil Ity in cooperation and Mutual under standing. No one can say. Today How this will come about will the relations Between the two systems continue up to a final violent reckoning or will both parties ceasing to rely on the i revolutionary systems or their atomic bombs emphasize the real or fancied weaknesses of their opponents return to the statesmanlike policy followed during the War to the policy so Neces sary and so favourable for them both if they do not. Then woe woe unto All of us. \ this is the. Last in a series of. Four articles taken from the memoirs of Eduard Benes ""5" to pay top prices to get it. That s the principle i be followed Ever since i be been in business and i find that it gets to like to take a Little trip to Morrow afternoon Tark said if it s convenient for Why not Stan asked.
