European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - November 18, 1973, Darmstadt, Hesse New York times deafness has t kept a new York family from full Active life. World sound by Virginia Lee Warren new York times when someone climbs the rather Steep flight of Steps bordered by Flowers and shrubs and rings the Doorbell at a certain House in the Flushing Section of new York City a Light embedded in a Wall Here a ceiling there or perhaps in an archway flashes on no matter How Bright the Day. For this is the Home of or. And mrs. Albert Hliboky pronounced lie Bock and they and their four children Are deaf. But aside from the strategically placed lights and a teletypewriter attachment to the Telephone this could be the Home of any family. A child with Normal hearing comes from across the Street to play with 6-year-old Gregory the television set in the living room has the sound turned on two other to sets Are upstairs and two year old Nancy has the run of the House although if she Falls and hurts herself no one can hear her cry out. The family aside from Nancy also leads a full and Active life outside the Home. Mrs. Hliboky who has a degree in sociology from Gallaudet College in Washington d.c., is in organizations attached to nearby St. Andrew s roman Catholic Church. Hliboky who has a degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College goes on business trips alone and often has to attend technical meetings. Thirteen year old Bruce goes to Horace Mann school in the Bronx until last year he attended regular classes at a Public school in Flushing and this fall two of his younger Brothers 6-year-old Gregory and 10i/2-year-qld Steve started Public school. All three boys got their earliest Educa Tion at Lexington school for the deaf and according to or. Leo Connor executive director of that institution were in a Superior . Class. Otill despite the impressive and Admi Rable Way in which the Hliboky have risen above their Handicap the question anyone is almost sure to ask is whether the parents after their first child was born deaf had reason to think that subsequent Chil Dren would also Lack the ability to hear and whether they wanted More children even if they were Likely to be deaf. These questions were answered recently when Hliboky took a few minutes out from his work in the Cost estimating and project management department at Mckee Ber Ger Mansueto. There was no reason to believe that the children were destined to be born without the ability to hear he said and he and his wife had no idea what the Odds were. We simply knew that we wanted four children Connor in a separate interview said that heredity was a vital Factor. If the deaf parents had had genetic counselling he said they would have known that after their first child was born deaf the chances of deafness went up geometrically for each succeeding child. It is when one visits the Hliboky Home that one comes to believe that the counselling would not have made much difference. Al Bert and Peggy Hliboky wanted four Chil Dren and they were convinced that they could give them enough warmth and love and Security and Opportunity to make up for the Lack of one of the five senses. Everyone except the baby can read lips that is How to can be enjoyed and everyone has mastered speech after a fashion. For instance when 6-year-old Gregory pointed out to a visitor what was to screen he sounded As if he were saying Pappy when it was but Hliboky Speaks plainly enough for Charles Corbo a co worker at Mckee Ber Ger Mansueto to say when Al talks it sounds to me like someone with a very b oth parents Are ambitious for themselves and for their children life is not going to defeat them simply because they cannot hear and when Albert and Peggy Hliboky had difficulty in Reading a visitor s lips recently they immediately asked the Lexington school for the deaf to give them a refresher course in lip read ing they Are also going to take More speech training. When 5-year-old Jimmy comes from across the Street to play with Gregory they use what Hliboky Calls Home made sign and neighbors Are helpful. For instance one next door will come Over and Tell mrs. Hliboky when her husband is to work late at the office. The neighbor has been telephoned by someone at Mckee Berger Mansueto what Hliboky wants for All deaf children is the Freedom to explore to express themselves and make decisions the same As hearing children do. No one should be Over protective of them. They have got to learn to stand up to life and take it As Page a 4 the stars and stripes sunday no
