The 6-foot-9 Cowens popping baskets Over 7-2 Kareem Abdul Jabbar threw in 14 of his 26 Points in the last period As the celtics ran their own Victory string to eight games. Boston took a 73-72 Lead their first of the game into the fourth period and baskets by Cowens Don Nelson and John Havlicek helped stretch the Lead to 81-74 after two minutes of the finale. Basketball Hall of Famer Honey Russell Dies at to Orange . A basketball Hall of Famer John Honey Russell died thursday in St. Mary s Hospital at the age of 70. Starting in 1918 with the Brooklyn visitations Russell played in More than 3,200 games in his 28-year career. He was the first coach of the Boston celtics Back in 1946 when they were part of the basketball association of America. One of Russell s play ers was Chuck Connors who later became the Rifleman on television. Russell coached at Seton Hall University in South Orange ., from 1936-1942 and 1950-61 and compiled an Over All record of 294-137. The University set a National record under Russell s coaching in 1941 by winning 43 consecutive games. In 1964 Russell was elected to the or. James Naismith basketball Hall of Fame As a player and was later selected to the same group for his coach ing. In 1963 Russell was named to the Helms basketball Hall of Fame in los Angeles one of 11 men so honoured at that time. Golf.
