Up a Yale University rower drowned late thursday after he apparently tried to swim to Shore while seven other Crew members Clung to their damaged Shell. Police said Carroll Swartz 19, of Juneau Alaska drowned after the team s Shell struck a water skiing ramp about 5 45  in the Housatonic River during practice. The seven Crew members Clung to the damaged Shell until a Yale motor launch which followed the team rescued them. However  tried to swim about 50 feet to the Shore in the Hilly Waters and disappeared. His body was recovered Sev eral hours later by police and firemen scuba divers
