European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - November 18, 1973, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 22 the stars and stripes sunday november 18, 1973 Dave Anderson Oakland s unusual two of a kind Finley Al Davis new York not his cold sniper s eyes almost disappeared Between narrow lids. Charles 0. Finley was in baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn s office Friday to Appeal fines totalling $7,000 and Proba Tion for his conduct during the world series notably the exile of Mike Andrews a second baseman who made the mistake of making two errors. But the Oakland a s owner was t wearing his Green Blazer. He had on a Black pin striped suit and a Silver tie. Those Are the colors of the Oakland raiders not the a s who prefer Green and Gold. The proponent of the Black and Silver color scheme is Al Davis the raiders major Domo. Strange that Oakland should attract both Charles o. Finley and Al Davis two of a kind. Each is a Man of intrigue each is part tyrant part rebel. Each appears to enjoy putting others on the carpet just As each appears to enjoy being on the carpet himself. I Don t know what the commissioner Means by probation Finley said his eyes narrowing even More. It s not in the Rule if it s not in the Rule Book Don t expect Charles 0. Finley or Al Davis to comply with the pleasantries of tradition. They prefer to live by their own rules. But they Don t publish them. That Way they can change them to fit their whims. Stares at hands each is an escape artist too. Charles 0. Finley obtained a Promise from Kuhn of a re evaluation. Earlier in the week Pete Rozelle the commissioner of the National football league cleared the raiders of alleged dirty tricks against the Pittsburgh Steeles in last sunday s game. But things seem to happen in Oakland that happen nowhere else or at least that surface nowhere else. Such As Andrews s exile. Such As mean Joe Greene the Steeles most respected pass rusher hurrying Back to the defensive huddle As he stared at his hands. I got vaseline on my hands mean Joe blurted. That Man must have vaseline on his mean Joe meant George Buehler the raiders guard whose assignment was to prevent mean Joe from dismembering the Quarter Back. Throughout the nil some players have been smearing vase line Type substances on their uniforms for years. Running backs and wide receivers use it on their pants and Stock Ings to make it More difficult for a Tackler s hands to grip them. Offensive linemen use it on the shoulders of their jerseys to make it More difficult for a pass rusher to toss them aside. But when mean Joe accused George Buehler of doing it Al Davis was considered the ultimate villain. Al Davis can reputation for that. Slow clock alleged later in the same game Ray Mansfield the Steeles Center was about to snap for a Field goal attempt. Hey he said to the nearest officials after having handled the Ball. It s under inflated. Another the official complied. The Ball might be been defective but students of Al Davis preferred to believe it was another of his plots. They also suspected him in a controversy Over an alleged slow clock that provided the raiders time to kick a Field goal moments before halftime. But the raiders lost 17-9. The week before when the new York giants visited Oakland their 45-Page defensive plans mysteriously disappeared. The plans reportedly were examined by gamblers in Lake Tahoe before they were discovered by a stranger in an Oakland Telephone Booth. Coincidentally or not the giants defense was virtually nonexistent in a 42-0 loss. Again the Al Davis mystique was under suspicion. Let me say this As god is my judge Al Davis said i did t know about the giants missing plans until after they got them the master but the circumstances were enough to create suspicion of his involvement. Not that Al Davis is has been or will be the Only superspy in pro football. As an assistant coach with the san Diego chargers More than a decade ago he studied under a master Sid Gillman whose first decision in taking Over the Houston oilers this year was to build a High Fence around their practice Field so that the oilers could t be spied upon. In the years when Gillman was coaching the los Angeles rams the Chicago bears somehow lost their Kickoff tee during a game. Can we borrow yours a Bear asked him. No said Gillman sharply. No at first glance Gilman appeared unsympathetic. Actually the Ranis tee was oversized therefore illegal. He did t want the bears to realize that. Al Davis studied Well. He hardly introduced intrigue to pro football but he polished its use. As a member of the nil s Competition committee he is involved in recommending Rule changes. He enjoys that. It enables him to examine the loopholes first. But the frustration of Al Davis is that the raiders never have won the super bowl game. Winning the big one Al Davis often says. That s what it s All about. That s Why we play this and that s where Charles 0. Finley is two up on him. Charles 0. Even has the nerve to Wear Black and Silver. La. District court judge Fred Daugherty ruled against the injunction request during a meeting in his Chambers Friday afternoon with lawyers for Jack Highley an Oklahoma City attorney who has been challenging the probation handed the sooner by the big eight and the Mcaa.
