Erving apparently became disenchanted with his contract after it was disclosed that Archibald s salary was higher than his. When nets owner Roy Bob refused to renegotiate or. A was dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers in a $6 Mil lion nets acquired Archibald with the Hope of teaming him with Erving an building the club into a contender in its first Aba season. But the two never played game together and the nets season col lapsed. Erving went on to Lead Philadelphia into the Aba final where the 76ers lost to port land in six games. The nets posted a dismal 22-60 record with Archibald miss ing most of the season with his foot injury. Johnson played sparingly at Golden state where Clifford Ray and Rookie Robert Parish were ahead of him at Center. He started for the braves but Brown Felt he was expendable. Our most glaring weaknesses were in our play outside said Brown. We were strongest inside and still will be. Getting Archibald will make our fast break Brown hinted that the braves would be involved in at least two More deals in the near future. One would involve Ernie i Gregorio the braves Little guard whose usefulness in Buffalo would seem to be at an end with Archibald now a Brave. I spoke to Ernie a month ago and told him he would be better off elsewhere said Brown. The other Trade would be for a backup Forward or Center said Brown. Up in a Surprise move thursday the Buffalo braves traded Forward Adrian Dantley unanimously chosen As Rookie of the year in the Aba to the Indiana pacers for High scoring guard Forward Billy Knight. Dantley was the braves first round pick in the 1976 College draft and had been considered one of the stalwarts of the club along with guard Randy Smith. He aver aged 20.3 Points per game and was Buffalo s second leading scorer. Besides Dantley the pacers will receive Mike Bantom by Way of the new York nets. The nets will be compensated for Bantom at a future Date Bob Mackinnon the club s director of player personnel said. In explaining the Trade Mackinnon said we feel that we finished close to the Bottom of the league last year and we anticipate other trades. We feel that deals have to be he added that he Felt it was a Case of two great players being Knight was the second leading scorer in the Aba last season averaging 26 Points and was on the Aba All Star team. Mackinnon said he Felt Knight can be played in the Back court and is a Good outside any time you get two Quality players for one you re ahead of the game said Bobby Leonard the pacers coach and general manager. Dantley 6-foot-5, is a former notre Dame All America who skipped his senior year in College to turn pro. The 6-foot-9 Bantom averaged 18.6points in 33 games with the nets last season. He recently signed a new contract with Buffalo. The pacers said Buffalo and the nets must still agree on compensation. In three years in the Aba and Aba Knight the former Pittsburgh Star aver aged 23.8 Points per game. Leonard said he and Knight had mixed feelings about the Trade. Billy has made a lot of friends Here Leonard said. From a strictly basketball Point of View i am very pleased. You win with the people you have up front and with this Deal we have tremendously improved our front court. I feel Billy is much More effective at guard and now we have a three Forward rotation of Danny Roundfield Dantley and terms of the two contracts were not Dis closed except that Bantom s was for four years and Dantley s for four plus a one year option. Another major Factor in the Deal was that Knight s agent put tremendous pres sure on us to renegotiate Billy s contract Leonard said. Billy s contract with the pacers had two years to go and we wanted to renegotiate for him because he is a tremendous player. However the pacers Are not in a financial position to a player More than $400,000 a year and the contract they wanted was for seven years at More than $400,000 per year. We could t afford this unless we turned the whole bal club the pacers formerly the showcase team in the defunct Aba almost went under financially after joining the Aba last year. A telethon less than two months ago in which they achieved their goal of Selling 8,000 season tickets saved the fran Chise
