European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 03, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday september 3, 1977 the stars and stripes it Page 25 rejects All army Usa eur singles Champ Oehrlein says he s just a social Tennis player by Dave Cowa staff writer Darmstadt Germany is Munich s Dick Oehrlein of Vii corps who swept to the Usa eur men s open single Sand doubles titles last week in Garmisch has possibly angered some Usa eur officials when he disclosed following the prestigious event that he would not participate in the All army trials next week. The lanky 35-year-old Courtman Defeated v corps Bob Becker who on any other Day might had won in three sets for the singles championship similar to their last year s meeting for the v corps title when Becker won that showdown taking a 5-3 tie breaker in the final set. Win or lose both men were already selected by the department of the army to participate in the All army trials sept. 5-12atft.eustis.va. However Becker is unable to attend be cause of military commitments. On the other hand Oehrlein just obviously declined the three week trip Back to the states for reasons that left officials bewildered. According to Usa eur officials themen s open singles would not be filled by the third place finisher in the tournament which upset a few More. The 6-foot-2 Union n.j., native a Liason officer to a German signal school at Munich caught Many at Garmisch Flat footed with his decision. He certainly had the credentials to Advance to the All army trials. He was there before As a Winner in 1974. Then Why would a player who has everything going for him shun such an offer for Oehrlein it was a simple play Tennis socially. I Haven t played competitively for one year. And besides have no desire to go to All army they have enough Good players to select from Oehrlein said. Competitiveness seemed hardly the appropriate word in this Case. After All the 180-Pound Oehrlein had just beaten Thebes the army had to offer in Europe. You could hardly say he lacked the expertise or toyed with his opponents on the court. Oehrlein was dead serious most of the time a characteristic needed in most cases to be competitive. Some players suggested Oehrlein was afraid he might lose in higher Competition and that s Why he is not attending the All army trials or maybe his wife influenced his decision. Neither Oehrlein said. About five years ago i made the break and decided not to compete in tournaments. I Only prac Tice a couple hours a week sometimes Only a couple hours a month. And then it s about80 per cent of the time with my wife Ginger and the rest with my two children Jeffery 7, and Krissy 9. I m just a social player. But i also like to play Tennis for the exercise too quipped Oehrlein. Basically he s a family Man said Ginger her words Cut Short by Dick. If i was to play Tennis constantly and As you say competitively i might As Well get a divorce. When you be got a family you jus can t spend the hours needed to compete competitively with others in tournament play said Oehrlein. Oehrlein started playing Tennis at the age of seven. My dad got me interested he said. He stayed with it throughout his school Days at Union High and was re warded for his efforts when he captured the new Jersey state High school Tennis championship during his Junior and senior years. Besides Tennis he lettered in football and basketball even baseball but base Ball practice conflicted with Tennis and had to give it up he added. Oehrlein who is a West Point graduate received his Bachelor of science in 1964 and then later his masters of science 1970 i operations research from the naval Post graduate school at Monterey Calif during his four years at West Point Oehrlein was ranked nos. 1 and 2 twice having to play second fiddle once to his brother Walter 34, who was one Yea behind him there. Walter is now a Tennis pro at the Birmingham athletic club i Michigan after serving seven years in the air Force. We re a big Tennis family said Oehr Lein. My dad was a real social Tennis player and my Mother also played. However when one of us kids had to compete in a tournament it was my Mother who carted us All Oehrlein admitted his opponent Becker pursued the game More competitively. I just like to play Tennis but that s not my main purpose in life he said. Undoubtedly it s not Becker s the Mcculley Barracks dentist at Wachenheim leaves Little doubt to Many that there s a Richer pot at the end of the rain Bow and he plans to work at it until he can reap its award. Anyone could see that he loves the game. He even had a shoulder operation last fall Vii corps Jim Keyes said twas his fourth one just so he would be Able to play this summer.
