The american 4 x 100 freestyle relay team of Jack Babashoff Joe Bottom Demont and Montgomery clocked in first More than 7 a seconds behind their world record time of 3 21.11 set in Berlin but still almost four seconds ahead of the soviets. Caulkins sped to first place in the 200 meter individual Medley in 2.19.58. It was her second Victory of the meet. As expected soviet european Champion Yulia Bogdanova was number one in the women s 100-meter breaststroke. The 13 year old was timed at 1 11.83, almost a tenth of a second off her european Mark. She was followed by Cathy Treible an Caulkins. The men s 200-meter Medley was won by Andrei Smirnov of the soviet Union in 2 06.83 with american Scott Spann second in2 06.88. Brian Goodell had no trouble beating Vladimir Salnikov in the 1,500-meter free style winning by almost 7m seconds with a time of 15 15.78. Salnikov set a new 800-meter european record however clocking the distance in 8 06.40. The women s 4 x 100 meter Medley also continued on Page 23
