European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 16, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes Friday september 16, 1977 yanks Guidry worries More about his pitching than his meager salary by Dave Anderson new York not not Long ago Ron Guidry was Riding up the escalator in a new Jersey department store where he was to appear at an autograph session. Behind him. He heard two teen age boys talking. That was some game Guidry pitched against the Texas rangers one said. the other said he s some Pitcher Guidry turned and looked at them but neither of the youngsters recognized the new York Yankee Lethander they would meet later. I guess it s like my wife tells me. Guidry says now the uniform tends to make you look a Little bigger than you but with a 14-6 won lost record and a 2.90 earned run average after his five hit 4-2 Victory Over the Boston red sox on tues Day inight. Ron Guidry is big enough. He s slender almost Bony at 5 feet 11 inches and Only about 160 pounds. But he has a fastball that magnifies his appear Ance and insults his salary. On a team where Ken i Zoltzman. The Pitcher he re placed in the rotation earns a reported $165.000. This handsome 27-Ye a old cajun with Black Wavy hair and a Gambler s Mustache from Lafayette la., is on the first year of a two year contract for an estimated 60.000 that s $30,000 annually. George Stem Brenner spends More than that just in phone Calls to Billy Martin. But somehow there is a sense of Justice in a $.30,000 virtual Rookie out of the farm system reminding the Yankee millionaires what baseball hunger is. Of All the Yankee regulars and leading pitchers Guidry has the lowest income but perhaps the highest motivation. I Don t worry about the Money he was saying in the Yankee clubhouse. All i want to do is go Back to the world series and pitch in it. I did t get into the world series last year. I got into the Champion ship series with the Kansas City royals for the american league Pennant but Only to Pinch run. That was a thrill. I got to run. But i wanted to the Way Guidry is pitching if the Yan Kees get to the playoffs and the world series he will pitch. But what is it like to he was asked that you re just about the Ace on a staff with so Many High salaried pitch ers Well he said calmly a couple of Guys had bad years and i picked them up. Maybe they la pick me up when i have a bad year. I think anybody wants to join the ranks of the High salaried but if i think about Money too much i la Stop thinking about the Way i m pitching. If you re going to get the Money you la get the but when Guidry signed his contract he was overpaid. He hardly got anybody out in Spring training. Billy Martin kept telling me he re called let me know if you can get any body out and i la let you pitch to but in Spring training i was t ready to pitch. I had no Opportunity to throw Back Home during the of season. I was Busy doing other mostly he was Busy with his wife Bonnie and the birth of their now 9-month old Jami. If you go to the Winter leagues a Yankee official had suggested you la have a better Chance of making the i know Guidry replied but my wife s having a baby. I want to stay even so he would have thrown regularly if there had been somebody in Lafayette that he could Trust to catch him. Catching a major league Pitcher with a 96-mile-an hour fastball is not like catching your Uncle a in the backyard. I would t air it out he said of his fastball but if the kid s not ready he could get Hurt. It s on my mind i might end somebody s career. You re not going to get me to hit some Guy on the head. I Don t know what that could do to As a teen age Pitcher Guidry had a bad experience that still haunts him. It was horrible he remembered. This Little boy i guess he was about 15, the same age i was. This Little boy squared around to bunt and i threw a fast Ball inside hoping to Jam him but the Ball hit him in the Chest and broke his Collar Bone in two or three places. He had to go to the Hospital. He was a Good Friend of mine and it really disturbed me. He s All right now. He knew i was t trying to hit him but it disturbed me. It still because he had not thrown in the offset son As most pitchers do Guidry was pounded in Spring training. My was t prepared to throw he said. If i had tried to throw hard i d have torn the Tendon out of my . And not being Able to throw hard i could t get anybody out. It was horrible. I did t know if i was Good enough to pitch up Here. I read in the papers that i might not come North with the team but i really doubted that they would Send me Back to the minors. I did t see anybody they would keep instead of no longer Relief hurler when the season began Guidry was listed As a Long Relief Pitcher. But then Catfish Hunter got Hurt in the opener hit on the foot by a line drive Billy Martin says. I tried Holtzman first in that spot in the rotation and he did t Cut it. Maybe i did t go Long enough with him but he did t Cut it so then i tried Guidry and the kid Cut among his teammates Guidry is known As the Yankees chess Champion and As the Ragin cajun a descendant of the French exiles from Nova Scotia who settled in the Louisiana bayous More than 200 years ago. His father is a Railroad conductor on the Southern Pacific run Between new Orleans and Houston. We were the Only Parish that s like a county up Here not to have High school baseball he said. We had american legion Ball that s How i got a scholarship to Southwest Louisiana University where i realized that maybe i could make it to the majors and the Yankees drafted even As a third round Choice he did not get much of a Bonus just a Hotdog with Mustard As he says. I m still a country boy Guidry said. I miss a delicacy i can t get up Here crawfish. I be got an apartment Over in Bogota n.j., for my wife and Little girl. I Don t come into new York much. I hate the traffic. I despise the big City any big City. Lafayette is about 80,000 now and when it gets to 100,000, i la get out of but it will be a Long time before the Yan Kees let him get out of new York.
