Namath once a six figure Man in a five figure Era now the idol of the panty Hose Popcorn and perfume Pitchman is being turned into another kind of Pitchman by the coach of the rams an ineffective robot running an unimaginative offence. There Are questions about his mobility and his velocity. But there Are no questions about his eyes. He is an acknowledged master at Reading defences at sensing impending blitzes shifts in coverages. So Why does Knox insist on sending Namath the signals from the sidelines Weeb Ewbank and Bear Bryant two coaches who know Namath s talents All too Broadway Joe will Shine again if Chuck Knox lets him Well would t do it that Way. I Don t believe in sending in signals/1said Ewbank Namath s coach during the jets super seasons. I believe in a Good game plan and then having a Good Quarter Back who can Call the signals and that s what i had in Joe. Maybe if i had a quarterback i did t think could do it i might change my Atti tude but Joe s an excellent Quarter Back Ewbank added. And if Weeb was coaching Namath in los Angeles who would be calling the Sig nals if i were there he said without hesitation i know he d be calling Bryant Namath s coach at Alabama drawled Namath is More Able to Call plays than i would be. I be always Felt like a quarterback any quarterback is right there on top of the situation and the team May have More Confidence in what Knox is doing is like putting the no. 1 draftee in Aba defends Lazy summer Milwaukee up Kent Benson the no. 1 Choice in the Aba draft spent the summer Bass fishing not shooting baskets. But he thinks his Angling expeditions will prove More valuable to the Milwaukee Bucks this season than any time he might have spent on the court. The Bucks tuesday held their first offi Cial practice. Benson unlike most rookies and especially a no. 1 Choice did t live and breathe basketball during the summer. He sunned himself and caught fish and relaxed much to the frustration of the Bucks who would have liked to have seen him play in the California pro summer league. But his contract stipulated that he did t have to play and he did t. It remains to be seen whether Benson and the Bucks will Benefit from his summer of Leisure. It was a really resting and relaxing summer said a deeply tanned Benson. I really had to get away from basketball for a while the pressure. He was As signed to the Case Friday when Nevada attorney general Robert list and his staff withdrew because of possible conflict of in Terest. Fun Benson s Case is that he needed a break from the intensity of playing basketball almost daily since his High school Days especially because of the Back problems he had last year in his final season with Indi Ana the College team he helped two years ago to the Mcaa title. But Milwaukee coach Don Nelson does t agree and is a bit disappointed that Benson did t play some pro Ball this think it the Layoff is going to Hurt him for several months Nelson said on the opening Day of Camp. He does have a lot of Small things in his game he needs work on. And it s going to take a certain amount of but Benson says he needed the rest and once he got himself together he report dearly about two weeks ago to work out with some fellow Bucks. That s really helped me a lot Benson said. I m getting into playing again and that s the main 6-11, 245-Pound Center is expected to Start for the Bucks. His Back up will be John Gianelli the former new York kicks and Buffalo braves player whom the Bucks picked up in the off season. Nelson has promised that the Camp will be the toughest any of the players has Ever experienced. Mona Lisa in a Motel or a Picasso in parking lot. It s a waste of Talent. Last year the rams quarterbacks too the heat not because they did t have ability but because they could t Wing it under adversity. Foresight not Hindsight has always been one of Namath s trademarks. And Knox has put blinders on , Ever the Diplomat in t second guessing his Boss. But he dislikes the Side line know when you re successful it s very difficult to change things he said of the rams division champs the past four seasons. I preferred calling my own plays Over the years but i can t argue with Suc Cess. We went through six games in the exhibition season and i have to say we did t put a lot of Points on the Board. The quarterbacks were calling All the plays then. So we be got to do something to get More Points. The coaches feel More confident with them calling the in the rams 17-6 loss sunday in Atlanta Namath started out throwing showing he still had the Arm. He put los Angeles on top with a 27-Yard touchdown pass to Harold Jackson a perfect pass into the end zone that covered maybe 45 Yards in the air. After the to things changed. Namath spent the rest of the afternoon throwing flare outs fullback screens and other Short dump off stuff. Why m not Gonna answer questions that Are going to be controversial about the play calling he said. I work Here. I do what i m told to you look at Namath s career Statis tics you find a sometimes electrifying sometimes mediocre quarterback. But when you look at Namath himself you know you re looking at a Man who transcends the game he plays. Which is Why he is so unlike Johnny Unitas another super quarterback who wound up a bitter Man playing in near obscurity. Joe he s a very special person said Al Ward the general manager of the jets. Never been anybody like him outside of maybe Muhammad Ali. Whatever makes Charisma or presence crowd Appeal sex Appeal Joe has but if Knox does t give him a free hand Joe May not have it for Long.
