S. Olympic com Mittee soc selects the american entry in bidding for the 1984 summer olympics Public apprehension appears to be growing Here Over the economic Wisdom of being Host to the games. Political leaders and some citizens Are warning that the City despite denials by local backers of this City s efforts to be Host to the olympics could end up with a Large deficit that would have to be subsidized by taxpayers. The Southern califor Nia olympics committee formed with the aim of bringing the games to los Angeles maintains that the games can be self sup porting. But paradoxically the committee says it would seek Federal Aid to subsidize the event. Last week the City Council agreed to finance the trip of a delegation of City officials to Colorado Springs this weekend to present the City s Case before the olympic site selection committee of the soc. But the trip was approved Only after an hour of sometimes heated debate. Los Angeles has generally been regarded As the front runner in the Competition against new York to attract the olympics. The primary reasons Are the availability of the los Angeles coliseum which was built for the 1932 summer olym Pic games and the City s stronger Finan Cial position. Whichever City is chosen in Colorado Springs is expected to be in a Strong Posi Tion to be selected to be Host to the games when the International olympics commit tee picks a City for the 1984 games next May in Athens. Political leaders Here led by City coun Cilman Ernani Bernard who have opposed the games have asserted that the local committee is attempting to get the games with promises that they will be self supporting but then demand tax Money when it comes obvious that the games will not be self supporting and it is too late for the City to give them up. Bernard recently brought to the City Hall More than 7,000 postcards collected by the announcer of a local radio talk show opposing the oly Kripics Here if local Money has to be spent on them. A Public opinion poll commissioned by the City recently indicated opposition if any tax reve Nues were needed. The local olympic committee s position that the games will be self supporting is in conflict with a study made last month by a City economic analyst at the direction of the City which concluded tha a deficit of $200 million to $336 million would result from holding the games Here. John argue chairman of the local olym pics committee said in an interview last week that no local Money would be Neces sary because of plans for a no frills spar Tan privately some businessmen Here who have been supporting the olympics assert that los Angeles would be Able to get by with a modest amount of new construction for the olympics because of the Lack of Competition to be Host to the games. The olympic site selection committee visited Here last weekend and generally gave the City High Marks. However some members were said to be sceptical about the financial projections made by the local committee. Some members of the site committee were also reportedly unhappy with details of the plans for a stadium that would be open rather than closed. A closed stadium would Cost about $25 million More than an open one. The biggest financial uncertainty is whether the City would have to subsidize construction of an olympic Village to House athletes which could add at least $ 100 million to local costs. The local olym Pic committee wants to interest a private Developer in building an apartment com plex near the coliseum but partly because it is within a poverty area no developers have been forthcoming.
