European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 29, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 the stars and stripes thursday september 29,1977 Jimmy new York a Young woman with a camera saw him first. She started running up Centre St. Toward Mark Rudd who walked in the morning crowd with his lawyer Gerald Lefcourt. The Young woman brought up the camera As she ran aimed it at Mark Rudd s 30-year-old face then stopped and crouched and began taking pictures. Here was the most feared revolutionary of the 60s. The one who wanted to change a nation. When she ran up to Rudd a thousand beetles carrying cameras rushed along the Street after her. The crowd surrounded Rudd and people were slapping into each other and Rudd walked backward from the Micro phones. He had on glasses and his face was smooth and his hair was in today s Short Flat Down fashion. Today it is the police who Wear floppy mustaches and Long hair some Cul Tures do lag. Once Mark Rudd stood in the basement of a building at Columbia University and said that the school was shut Down and that now All of America would have to be changed changed out in the streets. When he finished the press ran off to put him in headlines and on the evening news and a student a girl came up to him and said that was Nice rhetoric he was 21 then. But now it is 1977 and his face although unlined is not that of a student. His May is gone. Recently standing on a courthouse Street coming from the nowhere of living from the underground Rudd apparently signalled that he now was ready for such revolutionary heroic undertakings As some Day paying for the children s orthodontist. He stood on this courthouse Street like a piece of Loose change. A piece from Sara Davidson s marvelous Book on the 60s we had predicted that the Center could not hold it had and now we were in pieces. Loose change i told my Rudd pushed his Way through the crowd and received help from a policeman so he could squeeze past the cameramen and get into the District attorney s offices. Mark Rudd wanted everywhere for years his face living in j. Edgar Hoover s head hunted across the United states and Canada by teams of Fri agents surrendered this month to out standing charges in new York of criminal trespass unlawful Assembly obstruction of governmental administration and a couple of others of even less importance. Upon examination the Hurricane cannot Ripple the grass. A real defendant Gene Shelby leaning on the information desk in the criminal courts building lobby asked Why there was so much commotion. What s the Man s Case about Shelby said. Criminal trespass and unlawful Assem Bly he was told. Shelby s Mouth opened. You Here to write about that least i m Here for something real. That boy belongs in children s court. Who is he anyway Mark who you never heard of him Shelby was asked. No at Columbia University the students said the same thing. So in the twin endeavours of education and crime Rudd s impression appears a faint. There is the Case of an explosion in a Green wich Village townhouse in 1970. The House was a bomb factory for Rudd s Weatherman group. Three bodies were found and he vacant lot left by the blast became known As the Mark Rudd playground. But he has not been charged with this and the Odds appear that perhaps he never will be. So he left you Mark Rudd did with nothing to Salvage. And time has not determined the exact Worth of what Rudd s years represented. Many people see great rolling changes in the country As the result of the Rudds and the riots at All the Coku Bias around the country. This is to speak before you can see. Certainly nothing changed for the Blacks at the Bottom. They had no jobs in the 60s and they have no jobs now. But it can be said that Mark Rudd was part of the first youth revolution that was Prince Brown plan table talk Sacramento Calif. A the Prince of Wales should prepare himself for a change of Pace meal when he stops for lunch with gov. Edmund Brownjr. Prince Charles is scheduled to visit the 39 year old California governor for Liz hours oct. 29. It will be very simple . Collins a Brown aide said of the expected fare. What you la have Here that Day is a Man who has been trained and educated All his life to become ruler of Britain some Day talking with a Guy who d like to be ruler of the United states some Day Collins said. Copied by adults Rudd put Levis on All of Scarsdale. There always is the distinct Chance that the habits of mind travel along with the clothing habit. But a Case also can be made that nothing truly changes unless you do it within the Polit ical system. When i saw Mark Rudd and i thought of the 60s, i thought of the crowds in the streets at the democratic convention in Chicago in 1968, crowds of chanting Young crowds that had the sympathy of so Many of us. The Young wanted the world to change completely. Through the tear Gas Hubert Humphrey kept pleading Don t destroy the Good trying to achieve the in our arrogance we laughed at him and Richard Nixon became president by 500,000 votes and the Young who did not protest who were not protected by College were left to be killed and maimed and heroic in Vietnam. Therefore the claim that it was the turmoil of the 1960s that set the climate for the most important act of our time impeachment also does t hold up Well under examination. Recently rep. Peter w. Rodino jr., who ran the impeachment hearings said that what he did was not a consequence of the 60s of another time when his father came off the ship at Ellis Island with a name tag around his neck and an immediate Awe of a document called the Constitution. I was raised by my father to have a great belief in a great Docu ment Rodino was saying. I had that Long before the 60s." House speaker tip o Neill in town for a game at Yankee stadium does feel that the 60s have had an effect on Congress. At first it looked like the 60s turned off most of the Young people in the country he said. He promptly went into his business the arithmetic that truly runs our lives. In the 1972 elec Tion of those Between the Ages of 25 and 30, Only 25 per cent of them voted. But then after that something Good began. The protesters went away. But those who believed in the pro testers came to Washington. We re crawling with them. Right now we have the most Talent in Washington in the history of the country. The new elected members broke the seniority system. And the others you want to talk about Are working from within. I got a kid in my office Ari Weiss he had an in of 700 and it s improving every late in the afternoon at the criminal courts building on Centre St., Rudd was re leased in his own recognizance. He walked out of the building out of he 60s, and he now be comes another face in the 70s. He lived several weeks with severe brain damage and a broken body. My Battle with grief has been tremendous. Last year someone i know had a Young child who was killed in an Auto Accident. I went to the Home to express my sympathy. The woman began to phone me almost immediately after my visit just to then she started to drop in unexpectedly at All hours because i had been through the same thing and was the Only one who understood what she was going i prayed for strength to help her. I Felt As if a drowning person had grabbed on to me and was pulling me Down to the Bottom of the sea with her. Now i feel guilty for resenting the Way she has in situated herself into my life. At the same time i know i must get rid of her or i la crack up. What should i do sinking dear Friend you do not owe the woman emotional support at the expense of your mental health. There is something sick maybe Evern punitive about the Way she has Glommen on to you. Be perfectly candid. Tell her you cannot allow your old wounds to be reopened and her presence does just that. Suggest she work through her grief with a professional therapist. Then ring off. Dear Ann Landers quite a while ago you printed a letter from a girl whose Boyfriend was constantly tickling her. Your reply made reference to the fact that tickling was once a method of torture. A is Riding on this. Please reprint that letter and Settle it. Vitally interested dear vital i had to dig Back two and a half years Here itis dear Ann Landers you have printed several letters about relatives who tickle children All in May i comment As a student of Oriental history and far Eastern culture i can Tell you that tickling was a form of torture several centuries Back. Any paediatrician will verify the fact that prolonged tickling can cause hysterics and even convulsions. The expression tickled to death is More than just a phrase. Vallejo Cal dear Ann Landers i have a few words for that waitress in South Dakota who chastised women for being stingy tip she said she would rather wait on men any Day. I have had to endure Many waitresses who ignored my presence except to slap some food in front of me while they Are asking my Hus band if he d like More water More Coffee or was the food o.k.?" if waitresses gave women the same attention and Courtesy they give men the tips might be bigger. Irate in Oklahoma dear okla i received dozens of letters from women who wrote to express the same sentiments. The volume of mall and the intensity of their Wrath convinced me that there s something to s got to be a lesson in Here someplace. C 1977 Field enterprises inc
