Editor at Heidelberg proud of professionalism it s an Ama approved journal by Barbara Cullen staff writer Heidelberg is a onetime medical student who had to choose be tween Medicine and Ballet As a career finally ended up in Medicine but not As a doctor. Inge Sosa editor of the medical Bulle tin the medical journal of Usa eur has watched the onetime newsletter Blos som into a journal approved by the Ameri can medical association. In the office she shares Here with staff members of med come s newspaper the me com examiner Sosa has the Job of wooing sometimes reluctant medical personnel to write the technical articles that comprise the bulk of each Issue and of conferring with consultants on the accuracy of each article. Some people think this is a glamorous Job she says with a shake of her head. It s not it s hard work. Doctors Are atrocious spellers. About one fifth of my time is spent looking up words in the medical dictionaries. Spelling is important. One word wrong and the article becomes second class. One psychiatrist misspelled a word the same Way All through the article. When i pointed it out to him he told me i was compulsive and that no one would Sosa began work on the my As the bulletin is called in 1964 As an aide. In 1968 she became assistant editor and in 1971 she was promoted to editor. Born in Darmstadt Germany and raised in the West indies Sosa taught school in Australia and was a missionary in Jamaica before joining the my in Hei Delberg. Before i came to the bulletin i had never worked outside of a Convent or Mon Astery atmosphere. Working with soldiers was a cultural Shock she said with a laugh. The development of the my from a newsletter to a journal approved by the Ama is an achievement Sosa is proud of. Approval by the Ama Means you re in if not you re out " she said. In recent years the Ama has come up with a physician s recognition award to recognize and encourage physicians to continue their education. The award is presented to physicians who earn it by completing the education requirements which include Points for medical teaching publications and books. Presently for each article that appears in a medical journal approved by the Ama the physician will receive 10 Points. I try to do As Little rewriting As Possi ble Sosa said. Every article that comes to me goes through a consultant in that malagasy closes consulates Nairobi Kenya a the malagasy Consul general Here t. Yamamo Naisoa announced the closure of All his country s consulates abroad As part of a major econ omy drive by the government of the Mala Gasy Republic. Specially and they Tell me what suggestions to make to the author. 1 show the tors a proof of what the article will look like before it s run. Sosa said that since receiving Ama recognition she has had less difficulty in get Ting articles and that she has been Able to attract foreign physicians to write for the my As Well. The bigger the names we get in the More others want to write for us she said. We want to get away from the Mili tary Label. This is a professional medical journal. We go by the Quality of the article not the Quality of the one thing that makes working for the my interesting Sosa said is the variety of material that is published. Medicine is not Medicine per be. You might have five different treatments for one illness. That s Why we need medical keeping the my qualified is a constant concern she said. If the articles go Down in Quality or if it looks like a cheap publication it s out and we lose our Ama approval. The my stands and Falls on How much the doctors and consultants want to keep it she added. The my is mailed to every medical offi cer in Europe and to universities who re quest a copy. Presently the journal is mailed to universities in Switzerland Norway Italy Ceylon France Belgium and Canada and to All medical libraries in the states. A misconception about the my Many physicians have Sosa said is that they think it comes from Washington . And is passed out by the med come. They Don t believe it s printed overseas. Now that Sosa has attained her goal of seeing the my become a recognized medi Cal journal will she move on to another Job i Don t intend to stay with the my Eter Nally. I could leave it if it was perfect but it s still a Challenge to see How far you can take it she said. Every now and then i say i m going to quit and find a quiet Job but. " still she admits there Are pressures with the Job. Every Day i jog to get rid of the pres sures that build up. With every Issue there s the question will the whole world be mad at me Over the next Issue did i miss anything she laughed. Once upon a time i wanted to be a teacher or a child psychiatrist. Some Days i wonder is it too late Gucci s Rome Home robbed Rome up five masked bandits armed with pistols broke into the Home of leather goods and fashion creator Aldo Gucci police said tied up his wife and servants and got away with jewels and clothing. Officers said the bandits forced Elizabeth Holden Gucci to open the House Safe at gunpoint then tied her up along with two servants
