The Victory upped Alabama s record to 4-0 Overall and 2-0 in the Sec while Vanderbilt playing its conference opener now is 1-3. Alabama place kicker Van Tiffin gave the tide a 3-0 Lead on the first play of the second Quarter when he capped 74-Yard drive with a 40-Yard Field goal. Vanderbilt came Back to pull even at 3-3 after the Luckoff driving from its own 20 Yard line to the Alabama 2 before settling for Alan Herline s 19-Yard Field goal. The Crimson tide took control late in the second Quarter scoring twice in a two min Ute Span. W. Virginia rallies for tie with Pitt Morgantown . A West Virginia quarterback Tony Reda plunged 1 Yard for a touch Down with 4 38 left saturday As wot Virginia rallied in the second half to gain a 10-10 tie with Pitts Burgh. Reda s sneak on fourth Down brought the mountaineers Back from a 10-0 halftime deficit and produced Only the second tie in the 78-game series. Reda who replaced starter John Talley in the second Quarter set up the touchdown with a fourth Down pass of 14 Yards to tight end Gary Basil that gave the mountaineers 2 1-1, a first Down on the Pitt 4. The panthers held three running plays to 3 Yards before Reda hit off the right Side for the score and fresh Man kicker Charlie Baumann booted the tying extra Point. Baumann i 32-Yard Field goal brought the mountaineers to within 10-3 with 11 28 left in the third Quarter after safety Travis Curtis re covered Pitt fullback Darnell Stone s Fumble at the Panther 33. Pitt 1-2-1, scored All of its Points in the second Quarter on a 20-Yard Field goal by Mark Brasco who Misico from 46 and 36 Yards in the second half and on quarterback John Congemi s 1-Yard plunge. Five plays later Shula bootlegged around his own left end and dashed into the end zone from 6 Yards away. Tiffin booted his second extra Point for a 17-3 Alabama Lead with 1 59 still to play in the half. Aided by penalties Vanderbilt managed to move to the tide 9 in the closing minute before Herline booted a 19-Yard Field goal to Cut the Alabama Lead to 17-6 As the clock ran out. Vanderbilt freshman Tim Richardson relieved John Gromos at quarterback late in the third Quarter and led the commodores to a pair of fourth Quarter touchdowns. The Alabama Victory avenged a 30-21 loss to Vanderbilt last year in Tuscaloosa ala., which was the commodores first win Over the tide since 1969 and the first Home coming loss for Alabama in 26 years. Mccallum rushes for 138 Yards Navy upsets Virginia 17-13 Charlottesville a. A senior tailback Napoleon Mccallum rushed 37 times for 138 Yards and a pair of second Quarter touchdowns saturday As Navy s midshipmen posted a 17-13 upset win Over the 20th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Mccallum scored on runs of 3 Yards and 1 Yard for the midshipmen who won their first game after opening with three straight losses. Virginia which was plagued by mis cues All afternoon fell to 2-1. After Navy s Todd Solomon opened the scoring with a 17-Yard Field goal in the first Quarter Virginia countered with a 17-play, 80-Yard drive that ended with quarterback Don Majkowski s 5-Yard touchdown run. Mccallum who broke his ankle last year against Virginia and became the first Rcd shirt in Navy s history scored from 3 Yards out to give the midshipmen a 10-7 Lead Early in the second Quarter but Kenny Stadlin s 27-Yard Field goal tied the game at 10-10. Navy took the Lead for Good on Mccal Lum s 1-Yard scoring burst with 2 08 left in the half. Virginia drove 65 Yards late in the third Quarter but Barry word s 5-Yard touchdown run was called Back on a holding penalty and the Cavaliers had to Settle for a 25-Yard Stadlin Field goal. Navy finished with 262 of its 403 total Yards on the ground. Virginia ran for 196 Yards and passed for 108 More but Majkowski was intercepted twice and the Cavaliers also lost a Fumble As they were driving with 9 23 left in the game. Oakland pulled into a 3-3 tie on Jot Canseco s bases loaded two run single with one out in the eighth. Chicago reliever Dave Wehrmeister left the bases loaded. Jerry Don Gleaton came out of the bullpen to get one out. Canseco singled to right on the first pitch from Bob James who sought his 30th save but instead got the pitching Victory that made his record8-6. 1
