European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 14, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday november 14, 1985 the stars and stripes Page 19 commentary Champion skier Swan eaves service the Safe ski team can breathe a sigh of Relief for next year s . Last March Swan personally helped de stroy Safe in the . Forces meet which pitted the Best skiers of the two services. Swan who has had her heart set on receiving an Roth scholarship was planning on extending tier army tour for six months to compete against Safe if her scholarship was still in the processing stage. Swan sadly Learned us Ponio by thai her scholarship Marlene Swan forms never reached. 27 of 30 i tics i hair destination and evidently were lost. Swan wanted badly to attend the University of Wisconsin at Madison to be near her family. She had even turned Down an appointment to the . Military Academy preferring an Roth scholarship instead. So disappointed in the whole process Swan said Adios to the army in september but planned to attend College anyway. Before leaving Europe Swan and sever friends had planned to travel from Heilbronn where she was stationed All the Way to Morocco on bicycles. Last week i received a postcard from Marlin a in Madrid and she wrote Madrid is All the farther i m going. It took 25 Days of Riding to get Here and i have found that the Spanish Plains arc a she had a postscript Only one month until the Snow those that knew Marlene wish her Best of Luck. She gracious and very unaffected by her tremendous skiing ability. In two years Here she won every Alpine event she entered and last season was unbeaten in the Alpine and nordic events plus combined standings in both of the Usa eur and . Forces meets. The Bicentennial lanes manager is Bill Ruhman. A reason to support Princeton nearly every sunday morning this football season a Man named Jim Petrucci of Wiesbaden Calls to ask the score of a particular College team. It s not Southern Cal Oklahoma Ohio slate or Florida. How about Princeton. Petrucci has a Strong interest in Princeton because his son Jim is the co Captain of the team. Jim 21, is 6-foot, 234 pounds and plays nose guard. Though he is from Fleming on . Petrucci born in Brooklyn was a standout grinder and a prep state heavyweight wrestling Champion at the Delbarton school in Morristown . He was a first team All slate in football. In addition to four prep let ters in wrestling and three in football pc Trucchi also won two in Lacrosse. Petrucci is Prince ton s most experienced defensive lineman. He was a second team All Ivy selection last season and also won the or. Harry r. Mcpace award As the player demonstrating the qua fico photo lilies of durability and Jim Cirucci fortitude. Princeton co Captain to Dale Princeton is third in the Ivy league with a 3-2 record and 3-5 Overall. Last week it lost to William & Mary 33-28 and this saturday hosts Arch rival Yale. The older Petrucci works for a Wiesbaden firm that prints yearbooks for Dodds. Tim str ind strip 1 academies take new approach to football by Herschel Nissenson a sports writer coach Fisher Deberry took the air Force football team to a hotel last thurs Day and Friday nights before the army game. This is the Way it was when Ben Martin coached at the air Force Academy 1958 77 one of the things i accomplished Here says Martin now a businessman in Colorado Springs who docs color commen tary on the Academy s football broadcasts was taking the team off Campus because at Home games the Cadet Wing and it still prevails they la have Impromptu Pep rallies which May explode at 2 o clock in the morning and your Guys who arc sleeping in the Squadron area there s no Way they re Gonna get any rest. It also creates a team atmosphere where instead of being spread among 40 different squadrons they re a team in one area and they feel that Unity and togetherness. Those were the reasons that we did it. In the beginning we used to March in parades the morning of a football game and that s a Little Tough on the legs if you re supposed to be running As a football Young gets to take the army team off Campus the night before a Home game. This is the Way it was when Tom Canill coached Al West Point 1966-73 they got up Al the usual time which was somewhere around 10 minutes to 6 in the morning and then they had to attend one class in the morning usually a math class says Cahill now a High school Leachjr in Cliflon Park . Who does the color on army s games. We had the pregame meal at 10 30 and from then on they had Lime to concentrate on the Martin and Cahill were in rival radio Booths last saturday when air Force annihilated army 45-7. Air Force is the Only 10-0 team in the country is enjoying its fourth consecutive winning season after eight consecutive losing ones and is ranked fourth in the nation. Army despite the lopsided defeat is 7-2, its second winning season in a Row after Only one in the pre Vious 11 years. Navy the third service Academy is 3-6, bul four of the losses were by a total of 12 Points and the midshipmen had five straight winning seasons from 1978-82, including three bowl trips. Obviously the academics no longer arc Pushover. The academics from my experience arc a Little More practical in their approach to athletics says Cahill. They re a Little More realistic in what they expect of their players. Such things As no More classes on saturday morning the fact that they re Able to get them off Campus the night before a game which gives them a Chance to get a Good night s rest. I m delighted. I think it s important that All of the academies Field teams that arc certainly representative. If any or All of the academics Are turning out people who arc Happy with losing i think it s dangerous not Only while they re cadets but afterwards when they go out into their careers. I think the schedule makers arc again realistic. They re not playing members of the top 10 on successive saturdays. That s of great importance to any coach of a serv ice Academy team because of the limited depth that most of them have in compari son to some of the other schools who arc perennial National there Are numerous reasons Why the academies Are part of the parity sweeping College football. The first thing you have to consider says Martin is the mood of the country which reflects directly on Success in recruiting Young men. The military is once again a respected profession. It was still a Little shaky when i came out because Viet Nam was still a hangover with Young peo ple it was the i generation that sort of thing. I would say the country s general Opin Ion about the military is positive and that Means that you re allowed in a Home to talk to a son about the service academics. Sometimes we could t get past the front door or the watchdog because we rep resented the military. From the air Force standpoint the space program has had an Impact on the motivation for Young student athletes from All Over the country to be attracted to this program when they see it s an entree into the space program. It s an exciting thing and it attracts the attention of a lot of kids whereas 15 to 20 years ago there was no real space pro Gram to any extent and the mood of the country was anti military so we had a difficult time recruiting any number of Quality athletes. Also our recruiting Bud get was to thumb a ride on an air Force Bird borrow an air Force automobile when you get there and live in the boy. West Point was the last of the three academics to come along with Well this is How a football team prepares you had to sell the Point that if your opponents were doing this then you ought to be Able to do something similar within the guide lines of the institution. The institutional rules have been adjusted so that they accommodate a Divi Sion i a football program from the stand Point that they do have some flexibility now in training off season training train ing tables. We had an awful Battle to gel a lot of those things Laid you la find a difference of opinion How Ever among Martin Cahill and Deberry on whether the academics can be regulars in the top 20. I Don t think that any of the academies could play a very difficult Wick to week schedule like in the big ten or the South Eastern or Southwest conferences and indicate parity says Martin. The Atmo sphere in which they live and work and play is so strict and restrictive that it would be very difficult for them to physically match those kind of teams Wick to Wick. When i came in 1958, my team weighed 202 pounds and my opponents weighed 230, just taking linemen. Now. Air Force is 235-240. The opponents arc 265-270. So what did you gain there is a differential that i think is buil in. Of course Wilh the cadets routine i think that s about what you can expect. One thing that a lot of people Don t think about cadets Don t gel much Martin said. They have a very heavy 18 21 semester hours of academic work and they must prepare on a daily basis. They see academies on Page 21
