European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 14, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday november 14, 1985 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep pict 1 a perfect setting for a championship both teams undefeated and untied what More could one want unless it might be in scored on too for a championship football game. That s the situation As Giessen which has never lost a football game and International school of Brussels 7-0 this year and 23-4-1 since the Start of the 1983 Campaign tangle for the Germany Benc Normall schools football championship at Gissen sat urday. Charlie Toth s Gissen Griffins have been the talk of the town this year. Gissen is Dodds newest school and it burst upon the football scene with a big Boom going through a Silver Competition unscathed and then conquering a very Fine a Gold championship Augsburg team in the Battle for the Germany a championship. Each time the Griffins won after the third game they established a record for consecutive wins for a school in its first year in Dodds. Larry Kelly s raiders snapped shape s 24-game Dodds record winning string four weeks ago in route to the Bennor championship. They lost to Bamberg and shape in the last two games of 1984 and to Only shape in 1983 and 1982. Shape and Bamberg went into this same Small schools championship last year sporting perfect Marks. It was in that game that shape broke Frankfurt s 20-game re Cord. Each team had to survive a Biggie to get through regular season play unscathed. Lbs of course was shape which it conquered 28-6. Giessen s was bad Kreuz Nach which fell 17-3. Then the Griffins had to get by Augsburg and they escaped by the skin of their Teeth when linebackers Kenny Geddis and Roger Brown sacked Brian Taylor on the 10-Ynrd line on the last play or the Germany a title go. So the stage is set for another Biggie two perfect teams going for a championship which is As it should be. Kickoff is scheduled for i . Saturday at Barber Field on depot Cavern. Last week s game Drew a Fine crowd and a big one is expected again this time. It was great last week to see so Many football players and coaches from other schools in the a Gold Ana a Silver conference at the game. Is was there too. The raiders were Idle and Kelly had a full cast on Giessen team really impresses me. Those two runners Chris Beasley and Mike Harris really move the Ball and everybody s in there on defense. They swarm All Over credited the team tackling with playing a key Ben Abrams role in the win Over Augsburg. We knew we had to take the option away from Taylor so we tried to sync eur him and make him pitch the Ball. We got a lot of team tackles today everyone got in the said Toth. Tis better to Haw fought and lost than never to have fought at All those words by Arthur Hugh Clough 1819-1861 relate the playoff history at Augsburg and Wurzburg. A total of nine times have those teams gone to seek playoff glory. A total of no victories can they show for their efforts. At five Augsburg shares with Baum older and Hei Delberg the record for Dodds Post season action since the playoff system went into effect in 1975. The apaches lost to Baum older Hanau and Zweibruck in in Silver division showdowns and they bowed to Bamberg and Giessen respectively in Germany a championship games in 1984 and 198s. Wuerzburg lost to Baum older twice and is once in Silver division Competition. Last week the wolves tumbled to Wiesbaden in the big schools championship game. That tussle also was Wiesbaden s fourth playoff appearance. Wiesbaden now stands at 2-2, having posted a 1-2 Mark in games against Heidelberg prior to last week. Shape also has made four appearances All win Ning efforts. Bremer Haven Oslo Sholz has triumphed in each of its three appearances and Baum older owns a 4-1 record. The Wiesbaden Victory last week marked the first time the triple a team has prevailed since the big schools format was established in 1983. Baum older waxed Mannheim 41-17 in 1983 and Pitburg stunned Heidelberg 19-12 last year. Shape edged Bamberg 22-14 and 20-14 in the two previous Small schools playoff games. The spartans beat Ansbach 40-12 Ana 28-22 in their other playoff appearances. Augsburg could t quite handle Giessen last week but the apaches handled me. I picked them to win and that game was the Only one wrong in six selections. I have guessed right Only once in the five limes the apaches have advanced beyond regular sea son strife. The 5-1 record left the Overall log at 105-44 2, .705. In or final picks 1 take Gissen or is 20 16 and Ana Over Izmir 28-6 this week and in Ciurlik Over Izmir 38-0 in next week s season finale. All three right would wrap things up with a .711 season ii Cut age. O two new nominations from and Rota have arrived for the 1985 stars and stripes All Europe team. They should be coming at a steady clip by now. Less than two weeks remain to get them into the is office. I also Haven t heard anything from anyone in regards to All conference selections. The Stan and str pal academies from Page 19 Don t Cut classes they can t sleep in. If they want to stay in school academically they stay up late at night or get up Early in the morning. If the players get six hours of sleep a night during the football season that s about All you can expect. So schedule making becomes an Art if you want to have a winning program Over the years. West Point Cemi to be on the Road to the old West Point approach to scheduling. They schedule games that Are sure winners if you show up. Bob Neylan started that at Tennessee a Hundred years ago. He had a winning season when he lined up he said. Navy s approach is More nationwide playing the so called Money games. Air Force when we first started was nationally oriented. We played the Duclas the Washington the bus the Penn states the Colorado and All those. Now air Force being in the Western athletic conference that ii certainly an advantage As far As hav ing a winning season before you line it up Martin said. Cahill has some reservations about an Nual top 20 finishes. I m not sure that s their Mission to be in the top 20 or to be no. Don t think realistically they can expect to achieve that. The important thing in that they perform Well against the teams they re called upon to play regardless of the Caliper of the com Mcberry said that since he arrived in 1980 As an assistant to Ken Hattie i certainly have seen a change in the attitude of Young people from the apathy of the Vietnam Situa Tion to where they Are proud of the Flag and proud of the country a Little More of an Atti tude of what can i do to help rather than having your hand out and wondering what the country can do for you. But certainly the main reason that Young people choose an Academy is the prestige and the Quality of education that they know they can get Mcberry said. Young people Are very goal oriented and they re looking to the future. Young people see that maybe there s a lot of Money in professional football but yet there s not a lot of Security and not a lot of stability. They understand the air Force can offer As any of the services can offer profession can offer you a guaranteed Job when you graduate and then of course if you elect not to stay the prestige of having graduated from one of the three academies can really open a lot of doors and a lot of avenues he said. Certainly there s a lot of things Here a lot bigger than football. The no. 1 role we be got Here is training the future leaders of our country. The top 20 every year that s what we re Gonna try to do. I think we can be there year after year. I Don t think you can Ever get satisfied in a pro Gram. I m certainly not satisfied with where we Are right now Deberry said. Being very realistic i Don t think our skill level is like Oklahoma s or Michigan s or notre Dame s or any of those be got to play extremely Well every week. I m not sure we can go out there and play a bad game and win. Everybody we play has been bigger than we have. It looks like David and Goliath out there. That s something our players under stand and i Don t think they re intimidated by that any More. I think our players know that they be paid the Price in the weight room and that we be got a Chance to be As Strong As any of our Jackson s Heisman Hopes lie on season closing games Auburn. Ala. A Auburn coach Pat Dye said tuesday that Star Toi Iback to Jackson s Chance of winning the human e does against Georgia an Jackson a 222-Pound senior was average inn 200 Yards a game Rushing after seven sed hum ing 200 Yards a game vjrlj7insgames but suffered a Bruise thigh against Florida after picking up Only 48 Yards in the first half. Hobbled by the injury he gained no More Yards against the gators and Only 73 in limited action last saturday against East Carolina. I would like to think that he already has it won Dye said but i do think that if he rushes for 100 Yards against Georgia he de serves it and he would have earned it. Georgia leads the conference in Rushing Jackson now is the nation s no. 2 rusher with 1,523 Yards in 228 carries. His average of 6.7 Yards per carry is the Best among the top 10 Rushing leaders. Georgia has continued to get better and better All season. They were awesome run Ning the football against Florida said Dye. I thought Florida was a Good defensive football team when they played us but Georgia just ran straight at them and knocked them off the Florida which Defeated Auburn 14-10 in a tight bruising game two saturdays ago lost 24-3 to Georgia last saturday. They Are a Good solid offensive football team and 1 think they Are just As Good As they were when they had Herschel Walker and Buck Berluc said Dye.
