European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 19, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday december 19, 1985 the stars and stripes Page 11 Arm Landers dear Ann Landers every time i read a ice tar in your column that deals with the agony of de pression i wish with All my heart that i could sit Down with that poor soul hold his or her hand and say you can make it. There will be an p end to your suffer ing. 1 know because i was once where you Are will not Tell you the Story of my life but you should know something about me. 1 am a 68-year-old grandmother who was born with a chemical imbalance in the brain. I now know that my Mother had it also two aunts and several cousins. I spent years faking showing a Happy face to my family co workers and friends. I knew no Joy Only sadness and despair. At times i thought How wonderful it would be to simply die. I never told anyone How i Felt not even the doctor who gave me my annual checkups. All who knew me believed i was a cheerful and Well balanced person. As a College student i spent As much time As possible in the Library Reading every thing i could find on fears phobias de pression and mental illness. I also did a lot of praying for strength to hang on and raise my children. When i reached my mid-40s i often wonder if it coincided with the Onset of menopause i began to realize that i was doing less acting. I found myself laughing out loud and experiencing genuine pleasure. I was amazed to hear myself humming and singing. I had never done that before. By the time i was 52 or 53 i reached emotional normalcy. Looking Back which i rarely do because it serves no useful purpose remember blaming my parents my siblings and Var ious friends for my unhappiness. I now know that most parents argue and that most Brothers and Sisters Are not the Wai tons. Life is painful for everyone in one Way or another. I never went to a Counselor or a Psychia Trist. I would t have known what to1 say i took no medication. I simply kept going and gradually the fog lifted. I am writing this to give Hope to those readers who May be where i was Many years ago. The message is to stay involved Don t give up. What happened to me could happen to you. , ill., Reader dear deca Unthank you for a letter that is sure to Girt encouragement to Many. Today however a great Deal More is known about that chemical unbalance in the brain called depression. Drugs Are available to help people who suffer with this illness. Yon were Hicky to Haie made ii Wilmot drags. Most Nepote Don t. They live of their lives in the miserable state Shi experienced in your earlier years of wonderful that they Don t have to anymore. Dear Ann Landers i could never ask anyone else this ques Tion and i Hope you won t think i am crazy. Here Goc what is the proper Way to eat a banana the other night a woman raised up dessert and asked for fruit. When she ate the banana she looked just like a Monkey. official says pay will go up As Dollar goes Down i wish to address this question to the outline overseas allowances. Example Oha and per diem rates a tar appropriate authority whoever that maybe. With he Dollar falling so sharply recently .9? is going to be done to Aid the sol Diers and their family members who Are paying sky High rent and utilities Bills on the Economy i agree that the Effort being made to devalue the Dollar by our government and other Allied nations is Good for the Economy Back in the United states. But for the Mil lion plus americans overseas i m foresee ing some pretty rough times ahead. Nathaniel King Nuernberg Germany editor s note a spokesman from the office of the Deputy chief of staff resource management he Usa eur replies your question is timely in View of recent record setting drops in Exchange rates. Thu you for the Opportunity to briefly dear Bat the bit Una is natures f Dulf you Don t look he a Monkey a in who you a nothing to worry a boat. I not in111. . Force reminder Outlin o Cresca per diem travel and transportation allowance committee pm tatar monitors overseas allowances. These include Cost Omi ving col overseas housing allowance Oha called rent plus prior to oct. Temporary lodging allowance la and per diem rates used in overseas temporary duty toy and computations. All foreign currency Exchange rates Are reported daily to pm tatar. These Exchange rates annual Soldier surveys and other command reports Are used to set allowances Al Levels which give overseas based Servic members the same purchasing Power As u5.-based senic members of same pay Grade and years of service. Also considered Are total military compensation net disposable income and duly locations. Pm tatar periodically changes allow ances based on these reports figures. For example Rale were raised oct. 16, 1985. Based on recent Deutsche Mark rate fluctuations another raise is expected soon. Further he Usa eur has obtained Mark Exchange Rales that will cause cola to be paid. They Are 2.68 Marks for no support Remote isolated Sites areas 2-41 Marks for partial support areas Exchange commissary facilities within commuting distance and 2.30 Marks for full support communities with full Exchange commis sary facilities. assigned to no support areas Are now receiving cola others will As Well if Exchange rates continue to drop. Usa eur soldiers can be assured of accurate and timely cola and Oha pay ments by reviewing their a ave and earn Ings statements Les. Soldiers with additional questions should Contact their unit personnel staff no Punco for information. Sergeant learns what a difference a Day makes i have been through personnel re enlist ment and jag and have not received any positive results so i am asking you. When i was alerted at fort Stewart ga., to an overseas assignment in Germany the Levy Section gave me some bad guidance. I had an availability Date of dec. 5, 1982 after leave with an ets of dec. 29,1983. Be i was told a 25-Monlh Extension would be required to Complete a with dependents tour. Even though i objected and showed them that 24 months was All that was needed to meet the requirements they still demanded 25 months to Cut the orders. That was three years ago. Now i am saying Cor me it s time to get out of the army and go Back to College full time. Yet 1 can t catch the next term which starts Jan. 7 since i now have an ets of Jan. 29, 1986, thanks to fort Stewart. Since i won t have sufficient leave Days accumulated to take enough terminal leave i want to try to Correct the original mistake made by fort Stewart. It seems re enlist mint and jag say it s a personnel problem and personnel says it s a re enlistment problem. Actually it s All letters to the editor must cantata Yor privacy. My problem and i want to find an answer. It seems to me the army put me in this situation then the army ought to be Able to get me out. I Don t need to hear what i should have done two and a half years ago though it might help someone else now need to know what i can do at this time. Sgt Larry w. Thomas Stuttgart editor s note master sgt. . Cook senior retention no Usa eur retention 1st personnel come he Usa eur replies the action that you were required to take Al fort Stewart was Correct in every respect to Sene a with dependents tour you were required to have 36 months left in the army As of the last Day of your arrival month overseas. Since your ets was dec. 29, 1983, a 24-month Extension would have made your new ets dec. 29, 1985, or one Day Short of 36 months. There Are no provisions that allow soldiers with less than the required Lime even though it May be a matter of Days to be authorized a with dependents tour. Concurrently there Are no precisions that allow a Soldier to extend for less than one full month unless the Soldier is apply ing for retirement and needs less than one full month to reach the last Day of the desired retirement month. In the past the army offered Early outs for College seasonal employment Etc. The congressionally mandated strength of the army has forced an end to these programs in the interest of better management of manpower resources. Writer defends British monarchy in response to a recent letter on the coverage of the visit by Charles and Diana i would like to reply to one writer. He says he does not recognize Prince cd arcs As being a Prince Over any 1 can assure him that he is certainly my Prince As a citizen of a Commonwealth country which chooses to entrust the reins of Power to our Monarch. I would expect that americans would afford the same degree of respect to our head of state and her heir As we would and have for american presidents. I would not expect this writer to Don the Yoke of British oppression of this archaic oppressive our system of government a constitutional monarchy is a method of preserving traditions while keeping absolute Power away from the politicians who May be tempted to abuse it. It is much Tike the checks and balances of the american system. The american revolution was an insurrection resulting from a system of taxation without representation. The King of that period whom this writer refers to As an insane beast who abused Power was the object of nightly toasts at dinner by none other than Gen. George Washington. I would not presume to question the Wisdom of your first president who unlike this writer clearly understood the limitations on the Power of a King. . Steedman Canadian forces base Baden Baden Germany comments on spying on allies i and Many americans laugh out loud when we hear on to and read in the news papers about a Middle East country caught spying on the United states. What re ally puts the icing on the cake is the Way the state department backs away from the real truth. It s ridiculous to Tell the american people pen Pali that this country is so vital to the United states because of its location.
