Although flying occupies most of o con nor s time in the air he usually finds some time to Converse with the passengers. But the Tempelhof pilots Are reluctant to Dis cuss their famous fares. Lately o Connor has been co piloting a 28-passenger French Turboprop on regular runs Between Berlin and Paderborn Ger Many. Air planes have been in his blood since he was 12 years old o Connor said. But when he goes to work for the 1946th information systems so in the Berlin air route traffic control Center air planes Are tiny blips on the screen in front of him. On the ground and in uniform o Connor is an air traffic controller. In the air and off duty the 24-year-old airman is working to Ward a career in commercial aviation As one of six pilots for Tempelhof airways Usa. The half dozen years since o Connor left High school have had their ups and Downs sometimes what appeared to be a Down turned out to be an  assignment to Berlin s Tempelhof Cen trial Airport in 1983 was an example of an apparent Down that developed a decidedly upward turn. Entering the air Force with assurances that he would get the air traffic controlling Job he asked for o Connor said he planned to use his instructor s License to find outside work at an Airfield near whatever air base he was assigned to. But Berlin surrounded by East Ger Man airspace and with Access strictly con trolled by the allies offered him the in Welcome possibility of staying on the ground for several years. As for the air Force at Tempelhof the number of aircraft permanently stationed there and flyable could fit into one very Large Goose egg. Zilch. Zero. Empty hangars. And the flock of sheep allowed to Graze at Tempelhof to keep the grass Low meant o Connor could t even resort to his Origi Nal Airport Job. As a child he Cut the grass at the country Airport Between Weyauwega and Waupaca wis., and later moved up to gassing air planes. Instead of wages he earned time in the air with a flight instructor. After graduating from High school in 1979, o Connor decided on higher Educa Tion at the Gateway technical Institute in Kenosha wis. He planned to become a flight instructor but discussion in the Job Market was dominated by two words no  hello air Force hello Berlin and Good Bye flying was the prognosis As o Connor reported for duty at an Airport that had More sheep in residence than planes. However nestled in one Corner of the main hangar was Tempelhof airways Usa a Small air taxi company that hired part time pilots an acquaintance told o Connor. In 1984, o Connor was airborne again. He now co pilots the Paderborn round trip several times a week. The company schedules his flights around the average two Days off o Connor gets a week from the air Force. Approval to sell tickets for the regularly scheduled runs came late last year. O con nor Hopes the venture will show enough profit to allow the company to Purchase a Jet aircraft which he Hopes to Pilot full time after he leaves the air Force in 1987.
